Daniel Urai,also known as Daniel Urai Manufolau,is a Fijian trade unionist and former politician.
Urai was President of the Fiji Trades Union Congress. [1] From 1990 to 2006,he was also involved in the leadership of the Fiji Electricity and Allied Workers Union (FEAWU). [2]
He was elected to the House of Representatives of Fiji in the Lautoka City Open Constituency in the 2001 Fijian general election. [3] As an MP he opposed the Reconciliation,Tolerance,and Unity Bill. [4] He was re-elected at the 2006 election. [5] He lost his seat when parliament was dissolved following the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. Following the coup he continue as president of the TUC [6] and continued to serve on the board of the Fiji National Provident Fund. [7]
In August 2011 following the military regime's promulgation of a decree which banned strikes,he was arrested for unlawful assembly after holding a union meeting. [8] [9] In October 2011 he was detained by the military regime while returning from a Commonwealth meeting. [10] He was subsequently charged with sedition over a supposed coup plot against dictator Frank Bainimarama. [11] The charges were eventually withdrawn in 2015. [12]
In January 2014 he was arrested for organising a strike at the Sheraton Fiji. [13] The charge were later dropped. [14]
In 2012 following a break with the Fiji Labour party, [15] Urai joined other unionists in forming the People's Democratic Party. [16] He planned to stand as a candidate for the party at the 2014 Fijian general election, [17] and resigned his position as president of the National Union of Hospitality,Catering and Tourism Industries in order to comply with a regime decree banning union leaders from being political candidates. [18] [19] However,his candidacy was disallowed by the military regime. [20]
At the 2018 election he was accepted as a candidate for the Social Democratic Liberal Party, [21] but was not elected to Parliament.
He was selected as a candidate for the People's Alliance at the 2022 election, [22] but his candidacy was again rejected by the Electoral Office. [23]
Mahendra Pal Chaudhry is a Fijian politician and the leader of the Fiji Labour Party. Following a historic election in which he defeated the long-time former leader,Sitiveni Rabuka,the former trade union leader became Fiji's first Indo-Fijian Prime Minister on 19 May 1999,but exactly one year later,on 19 May 2000 he and most of his Cabinet were taken hostage by coup leader George Speight,in the Fiji coup of 2000. Unable to exercise his duties,he and his ministers were sacked by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara on 27 May;Mara intended to assume emergency powers himself but was himself deposed by the military leader,Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
Tupeni Lebaivalu Baba is a Fijian academic,politician,and former Cabinet Minister. A founding member of the Fiji Labour Party,he served as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Timoci Bavadra until removed from office by the 1987 Fijian coups d'état,and then one of the two Deputy Prime Ministers in the government of Mahendra Chaudhry until removed from office by the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. After splitting with Choudhry in the wake of the coup,he founded the New Labour Unity Party to contest the 2001 election,but failed to win a seat in Parliament. He unsuccessfully attempting to re-enter politics at the 2006 election under the banner of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua,and again at the 2014 election as part of the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
Josaia Voreqe "Frank" Bainimarama is a Fijian politician and former naval officer who served as the prime minister of Fiji from 2007 until 2022. A member of the FijiFirst party,which he founded in 2014,he began his career as an officer in the Fijian navy and commander of the Fijian military. Despite being suspended from Parliament,he served as the opposition leader from 24 December 2022 until 8 March 2023,when he resigned and was replaced by Inia Seruiratu.
Nanise Nagusuca is a former Fijian politician. She was a member of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua and Social Democratic Liberal parties. She was convicted of sedition in 2017 and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Poseci Waqalevu Bune was a Fijian civil servant,diplomat,politician and Cabinet Minister. He served as chair of the Public Service Commissioner,secretary to the Prime Minister,and as Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations,as well as a Cabinet Minister in the governments of Mahendra Chaudhry and Laisenia Qarase,and in the military regime of Frank Bainimarama. Bune died of prostate cancer on 22 November 2023,at the age of 77.
Ofakilomaloma Swann,also known as Ofa Duncan,is a Fijian lawyer,academic,and former politician. She served in the House of Representatives of Fiji from 1999 to 2006,and was leader of the New Labour Unity Party.
Kenneth Vincent Zinck is a former Fijian trade unionist,politician and Cabinet Minister,who served as Minister of Labour in the government of Laisenia Qarase from 2001 to 2006. In the aftermath of the 2006 Fijian coup d'état he sought political asylum in Australia.
Simione Kaitani is a former Fijian politician and Cabinet Minister in the government of Laisenia Qarase. He was tried for taking an illegal oath over the 2000 Fijian coup d'état in 2005,but acquitted. He later served as Leader of the House,until removed from office by the 2006 Fijian coup d'état.

Mohammed Tahir is a former Fijian politician of Indian descent. He represented the Labasa Rural Indian Communal Constituency,one of 19 reserved for Indo-Fijians,which he retained for the Fiji Labour Party (FLP) in a byelection held on 6 December 2003 to succeed the late Mohammed Latif Subedar.
Attar Singh is an Indo-Fijian trade unionist. From 2002 to 2018 he was General Secretary of the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU),one of two major umbrella bodies for trade unions in Fiji.

After serving as Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy,he was appointed as a Minister in the military regime of dictator Frank Bainimarama. After being elected to the Parliament of Fiji in the 2022 election,he is currently Minister for Employment,Productivity and Industrial Relations in the coalition government.

Ratu Rakuita Saurara Vakalalabure is a Fijian lawyer and former politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Fiji from 2001 to 2004. In August 2004 he was convicted of participation in the 2000 Fijian coup d'état and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. He was the son of Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure,who served in both houses of Parliament from the 1970s to the 1990s.
