The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete.
Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and formerly specialized at the 5000 metre distance. Regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time, he is the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathon champion and the world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2:01:09 set at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. He has run four of the six fastest marathons in history.

The British Athletics Championships is the premier national championship in track and field held in the United Kingdom, and are organised by British Athletics. The event has doubled as the main trials meet for international team selection for major events in which Great Britain and Northern Ireland compete, including the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the European Athletics Championships. Only British athletes may formally compete, though in some circumstances British club-affiliated foreign athletes may take part as guests.
Haron Keitany is a runner from Kenya, who specialises in 1500 metres. In 2008, he won 1500 metres races at the African Championships, the IAAF Golden League meeting of Weltklasse Zürich, and World Athletics Final. He missed the Beijing Olympics though, after finishing fourth at the Kenyan trials.
Simon Kemboi is a retired sprinter from Kenya. He specialised in 400 metres. He is a World Championships and African Championships medalist, and competed at the Olympics.

Suguru Osako is a Japanese long-distance runner. He won the 10,000 metres gold medal at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen and holds the Asian junior record for the half marathon. He held the Japanese National Record for the marathon of 2:05:29 set at the 2020 Tokyo Marathon, where he finished fourth.
Kevin Lyles is an American former sprinter. He won gold medals with the United States in the 4 × 400-meter relay at the 1993 Summer Universiade and at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics, where he was an alternate runner in the heats stage.
Dennis Kipruto Kimetto is a Kenyan long distance runner who competes in road running events. He was the world record holder in the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours 2 minutes 57 seconds, a record which he held until Eliud Kipchoge broke it in 2018 with a time of 2:01:39.
Zharnel Hughes is an Anguillan-born British sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Born and raised in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, he has competed internationally for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, World Athletics and European Athletics events, and for England at the Commonwealth Games, since 2015.
Aicha Bilal Fall is a Mauritanian middle-distance runner who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the women's 800 m event. She was born in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Carrie Russell is a Jamaican track and field sprinter and bobsledder. She competed in the 4x100 metres relay event at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, winning a gold medal. She is from the parish of St. Thomas. She attended the St. Thomas Technical High School. She was also the bronze medallist at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics.

Bird-Smith represented Australia at the World Championships in Athletics three times, and has appeared four times at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships/Cup.

Baboloki Tirelo Thebe is a Botswana track and field sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He was a silver medallist in the 200 metres at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. He reached the semi-finals at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics. He made a breakthrough in the 400 m in May 2016 with a run of 44.22 seconds, placing him third on the global seasonal lists and moving him into the all-time top 30 for the event. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics. His personal best in 400 meters is 44.02, which he ran in July 2017
Eddy Hellebuyck is a Belgian-born American long-distance runner. He competed in the men's marathon at the 1996 Summer Olympics, representing Belgium and finishing in 67th place. By 2000, he had become a U.S. citizen and competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials that year, but did not make the team.
Dexter Faulk is an American male former track and field hurdler who specialized in the 110-meter hurdles. He holds personal records of 13.13 seconds outdoors and 7.40 seconds in the indoor 60-meter hurdles event, which ranks him twelfth on the all-time lists as of 2018. He was a gold medallist at the 2007 NACAC Championships.
