Born in Toms River, New Jersey, Clinch graduated from Toms River High School East in 1982. After attending Ocean County College, he attended the New England School of Photography, a two-year institution located in Boston. [1]
Clinch began his career as an intern for Annie Leibovitz, [2] and went on to photograph the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Tupac Shakur, The Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Nicole Atkins, and Björk. His "unobtrusive" style, according to his bio, is one of the features that Clinch's photographic subjects enjoy. [3]
Clinch's photographs have appeared in publications throughout the world, including Vanity Fair , Spin , The New Yorker , The New York Times , [4] and Rolling Stone . Clinch has presented his work in numerous galleries and published three books: Discovery Inn, When the Iron Bird Flies, Still Moving, and, his most recent, Motor Drive. In February 2016, Danny was featured on 60 minutes.
In 2003, Clinch founded the film company Three on the Tree Productions, based in New York City. [5] He is also among the 43 noted photographers invited to donate a print to "FOCUS: an auction of the finest photography to benefit City Harvest...." Clinch directed a concert DVD documenting Pearl Jam's 2006 tour of Italy entitled Immagine in Cornice which was released in 2007. In 2013 he directed the video for the band's single Mind Your Manners . [6] [7] He also directed the DVD portion of Springsteen's Devils & Dust DVD box-set, and co-directed the award-winning 2019 film All I Can Say , which was composed of footage shot by late Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon on his video camera. Written by guitarist Stone Gossard, the song originated as an instrumental titled "Dollar Short" and was included on a demo tape circulated in hopes of finding a singer for the group. Certifiable: Live in Buenos Aires is a live album and concert video by the Police. It was recorded in December 2007 during the band's reunion tour and was released in November 2008. The album was released in the US exclusively through Best Buy. The album has a number of releases including a four disc version containing two CDs and two DVDs. The two CDs contain the live album from River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The first DVD contains the 109-minute wide-screen concert presented in Dolby Surround and Stereo. The concert film was directed and produced by Jim Gable and Ann Kim, of Graying & Balding, Inc. The second DVD contains the 50-minute bonus feature, "Better Than Therapy," directed by Stewart Copeland's son Jordan Copeland, detailing The Police's reunion with behind-the-scenes interviews from the band and road crew, plus two photo galleries of The Police on tour: one shot by guitarist and photographer Andy Summers, and one by photographer Danny Clinch. The DVDs were also released on Blu-ray format. A triple vinyl format was also released that contained a digital download of the concert.
