Omar David Hernández Colón, known as Darkiel, is a Puerto Rican reggaeton singer and actor, [1] born in Lares. He is better known for his role in the Netflix biographical series of Nicky Jam called Nicky Jam: El Ganador . [1] [2]

Career

Darkiel started his career at the age of nineteen with social media, doing freestyles on Facebook page Freestyle Mania Music. [3] His inspirations are Daddy Yankee and Don Omar. [3]

Darkiel has issued over two dozen video singles. They include "Ella Me Oculta," "Aqui Estas Tu" (and a remix), "Si Me Apagan el Sol", "Montate y Zumba", and a lyric video of the J Alvarez remix of "De una Forma Diferente" that gained over 300,000 views within four days of posting it in August 2016. Darkiel's videos have amassed over 40 million views on YouTube. [4]

Darkiel acted in the biographical series Nicky Jam: El Ganador, based on the story of American reggaeton artist Nicky Jam, as the younger self of the latter. [5] [1] [2]

In 2019, Cárdenas Marketing Network, a company that has marketed other Puerto Rican musicians such as Bad Bunny [6] and Marc Anthony, [7] began work with Darkiel. [8]

Lyrics

His lyrics talk about the ups and downs of romance [3] and Darkiel has said that he "doesn’t need to be explicit to be liked by youth". [9] He has been praised for releasing "clean reggaeton". [9]

At one time he stated he did not want to be part of the Latin trap, saying in Spanish: [3]

I have participated in some remix of songs, such as with Bryant Myers, Anuel AA, Noriel, in which they appear. I even have some trap which are not that explicit.

I like trap’s music, I like its rhythm. But it’s not a line I want to focus on.

The duo were initially called Los Nene before adopting the name Magnate y Valentino. They were among the first duos to include ballads and romantic songs in the discography. Having debuted in 1998 in an artists compilation album The Warriors 2: Batalla En Dos Tiempos, the two continued to be featured in other compilations like Tha Cream 4, 9 Plagas 2, The Flow 2 and The show en la Feria. However it was with Rompiendo el Hielo their debut album in 2002 that they were highlighted cooperating with Héctor & Tito in "Gata Celosa" and with Nicky Jam in "Quiero que hagas mujer". "Te Buscaré" arranged by Alejandro Montalván and Eduardo Reyes, was a huge hit. The follow-up albums were Sin Límite (2004), and Quimica Perfecta (2009). The series is directed by Jessy Terrero, and produced by Endemol Shine Boomdog for Telemundo, and Netflix. It stars Nicky Jam as the titular character. Filming began on 15 January 2018, and the series consists of 13 episodes.

The commercial breakthrough of this music took place in 2017 with artists from Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico, the United States, Venezuela and even non-Spanish-speaking nations, such as Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken.
