The Music of Puerto Rico has evolved as a heterogeneous and dynamic product of diverse cultural resources. The most conspicuous musical sources of Puerto Rico have primarily included African, Taino Indigenous, and European influences. Puerto Rican music culture today comprises a wide and rich variety of genres, ranging from essentially native genres such as bomba, jíbaro, seis, danza, and plena to more recent hybrid genres such as salsa, Latin trap and reggaeton. Broadly conceived, the realm of "Puerto Rican music" should naturally comprise the music culture of the millions of people of Puerto Rican descent who have lived in the United States, especially in New York City. Their music, from salsa to the boleros of Rafael Hernández, cannot be separated from the music culture of Puerto Rico itself.
Reggaeton, also known as reggaetón or reguetón, is a modern style of popular and electronic music that originated in Panamá during the late 1980s, and which rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s through a plethora of Puerto Rican musicians. It has been popularized and dominated by artists from Puerto Rico since the early 1990s.
Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, known professionally as Daddy Yankee, is a Puerto Rican semi-retired rapper, singer and actor who rose to worldwide prominence in 2004 with the song "Gasolina". Dubbed the "King of Reggaeton", he is often cited as an influence by other Hispanic urban performers. He retired on December 3, 2023, after completing his final stage performance on his "La Meta" tour in Puerto Rico.
Nick Rivera Caminero, known by his stage name Nicky Jam, is an American singer. He is best known for hits such as "X", "Travesuras", "En la Cama", "Te Busco", "El Perdón", "Hasta el Amanecer", and "El Amante"; the later three are from his 2017 album Fénix. He has frequently collaborated with other Latin artists such as Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Ozuna, Plan B and Anuel AA. While his early music exemplified traditional fast-paced reggaeton, his newer compositions place more emphasis on sung vocals and romantic lyrics.
Magnate & Valentino were a Puerto Rican reggaeton duo made up of Ramón del Robledo Nuñez Oliviera known as Magnate and Peter González Torres known as Valentino. The duo were initially called Los Nene before adopting the name Magnate y Valentino. They were among the first duos to include ballads and romantic songs in the discography. Having debuted in 1998 in an artists compilation album The Warriors 2: Batalla En Dos Tiempos, the two continued to be featured in other compilations like Tha Cream 4, 9 Plagas 2, The Flow 2 and The show en la Feria. However it was with Rompiendo el Hielo their debut album in 2002 that they were highlighted cooperating with Héctor & Tito in "Gata Celosa" and with Nicky Jam in "Quiero que hagas mujer". "Te Buscaré" arranged by Alejandro Montalván and Eduardo Reyes, was a huge hit. The follow-up albums were Sin Límite (2004), and Quimica Perfecta (2009). The duo also collaborated with Don Omar in the hit "Dile a Ella". Imparables became the duo's last album together in 2013. Soon after, the duo separated and each continued with a solo career.
Austin Agustín Santos Rosas, better known by his stage name Arcángel, is an American rapper and singer, and the one-half of reggaeton duo Arcángel & De la Ghetto, alongside De la Ghetto. He is often described as one of the most influential artists in the Latin urban genre, as well in Latin music overall, and one of the pioneers of Latin trap music.
José Fernando Cosculluela Suárez, known professionally as Cosculluela, is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer and songwriter. In 2018, he was caught up in a controversy after fellow rapper Anuel AA released a diss track.

Manuel Alejandro Ruiz is a multi-platinum and award-winning music and filmmaker and producer known by his stage name Boy Wonder. Wonder is also the CEO the record label Chosen Few Emerald Entertainment, Inc. and has been recognized as one of the pioneering entertainment figures to elevate Reggaeton, and push the genre to the forefront of the music industry. Over the years, he has worked with stars like J Balvin, Farruko, Daddy Yankee, Wisin, Yandel, Pitbull and new school Latin urban artist's Jon Z and Darkiel.
R.K.M & Ken-Y is a reggaeton duo formed in 2003 by José Nieves (R.K.M) and Kenny Vázquez (Ken-Y). The artists are renowned in the Latin music world for being the first to successfully fuse mainstream pop music with the reggaeton street rhythms of Puerto Rico and expose the style to a wide international audience. The sound introduced by R.K.M & Ken-Y would go on to inspire the pop reggaeton songs of successful acts such as CNCO, J Balvin, and Maluma. The duo had a very successful career with the Spanish-speaking audience of Latin America, the United States, and Spain until their separation in 2013. In June 2017, the duo announced their official return by Pina Records. In mid-2021 the Duo confirmed that they are on hiatus and are currently working on their solo projects.
Nicky Jam: El Ganador is an American biographical television series based on the life of reggaeton singer Nicky Jam. The series is directed by Jessy Terrero, and produced by Endemol Shine Boomdog for Telemundo, and Netflix. It stars Nicky Jam as the titular character. Filming began on 15 January 2018, and the series consists of 13 episodes.
Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado , known simply by his surname Ozuna, is a Puerto Rican singer, born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. Five of his studio albums have topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, with Aura (2018) charting at number seven on the Billboard 200. His musical style is primarily defined as reggaeton and Latin trap, although he has collaborated with several artists from different genres and his music takes influences from a wide variety of genres, including pop, rock, hip hop, R&B, reggae, bachata, dembow, and electronic, amongst others.
Ronny Kevin Roldán Velasco is a Colombian singer, songwriter and music producer.
Latin trap is a subgenre of Latin hip hop music that originated in Puerto Rico. A direct descendant of southern hip hop, and influenced by reggaeton, it gained popularity after 2007, and has since spread throughout Latin America. The trap is slang for a place where drugs are sold. Latin trap is similar to mainstream trap with lyrics about life on la calle, drugs, sex and violence.
Jonathan Resto Quiñones, known professionally as Jon Z, is a Puerto Rican rapper and record producer.
Osvaldo Elías Castro Hernández, better known by the stage name Darell is a Puerto Rican rapper and songwriter specializing in reggaeton and Latin trap. Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York. He is signed to White Lion Records and Sony Music Latin.
La Gira Dura was a concert tour by Puerto Rican artist Daddy Yankee. The tour name references his 2018 hit Dura.
Urbano music or Latin urban is a transnational umbrella category including many different genres and styles. As an umbrella term it includes a wide and diverse set of genres and styles such as dancehall, dembow, urban champeta, funk carioca, Latin hip hop and reggaeton. The commercial breakthrough of this music took place in 2017 with artists from Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico, the United States, Venezuela and even non-Spanish-speaking nations, such as Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken.
