Prof. Darni M Daud (born 25 July 1961, Pidie, Indonesia) is the former rector of Syiah Kuala University (USK) in Aceh, Indonesia, the largest state university in Banda Aceh beside Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry. He was recently re-elected in March 2010, in recognition of his efforts to rebuild the university after the 2004 tsunami. In 2008, the CampusAsia Magazine named him as the 7th best education leader in Indonesia. [1]
Daud graduated from the University of Syiah Kuala in 1985. He studied in the University of Sydney, Australia for a diploma. Then undertook a master's degree in Inter-cultural Communications at New York University, and a Phd in Higher Education at Oregon State University. He received many scholarships such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the Indonesian Cultural Foundation scholarship. [2]
Daud has been involved in many organizations, and has led many important conferences and seminars across Aceh and Indonesia, such as the Pekan Kebudayaan Aceh (PKA), which is a quadrennial event to promote the culture of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. He has been actively involved in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Aceh from the damage caused by the Great Asian tsunami in 2004, and has been actively raising funds to develop the quality of education in Aceh. He ran for governor for the 2011-2015 period, and currently running again for the 2024-2029 period. [3]
Sumatra is one of the Sunda Islands of western Indonesia. It is the largest island that is fully within Indonesian territory, as well as the sixth-largest island in the world at 475,807.63 km2 (182,812 mi.2), including adjacent islands such as the Simeulue, Nias, Mentawai, Enggano, Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung and Krakatoa archipelago.
Aceh, officially the Province of Aceh, is the westernmost province of Indonesia. It is located on the northern end of Sumatra island, with Banda Aceh being its capital and largest city. Banda Aceh is the capital and largest city in the province of Aceh, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra and has an elevation of 35 meters. The city covers an area of 61.36 square kilometers (23.69 sq mi) and had a population of 223,446 people at the 2010 Census, rising to 252,899 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2023 was 261,969.
Hasan Muhammad di Tiro, was the founder of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), an organisation which attempted to separate Aceh from Indonesia from the 1970s. It surrendered its separatist goals and agreed to disarm as agreed to in the Helsinki peace deal of 2005. He was the maternal great-grandson of Tengku Cik di Tiro, an Indonesian national hero who was killed fighting the Dutch in 1891. In 2010 he obtained his Indonesian citizenship back shortly before his death.
Library damage resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake has been reported in six Asian countries. On December 26, the massive 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake struck off the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The resulting tsunamis killed more than 180,000 people. In addition to the loss of human lives, cultural institutions were destroyed in several Asian nations. Libraries on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka and the northern province of Aceh on Sumatra were most severely affected by the disaster.
Pidie Regency is a regency of Aceh Special region, in Indonesia. It is located in the north of the island of Sumatra, in Western Indonesia, bordered by the Malacca Strait and Pidie Jaya Regency in the north, Aceh Besar Regency in the west, Bireuen Regency in the northeast, and Aceh Jaya Regency in the south. The regency covers an area of 3,184.46 square kilometres and had a population of 379,108 people at the 2010 Census and 435,275 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 448,085 - comprising 223,208 males and 224,877 females. Pidie was the largest rice-producing area of Aceh province, producing some 20% of its total output.
Taufiq Ismail is an Indonesian poet, activist and the editor of the monthly literary magazine Horison. Ismail figured prominently in Indonesian literature of the post-Sukarno period and is considered one of the pioneers of the "Generation of '66". He completed his education at the University of Indonesia. Before becoming active as a writer, he taught at the Institut Pertanian Bogor. In 1963, he signed the "Cultural Manifesto" as a document that opposed linking art to politics. This cost him his teaching position at the Institut.
The insurgency in Aceh, officially designated the Rebellion in Aceh by the Indonesian government, was a conflict fought by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) between 1976 and 2005, with the goal of making the province of Aceh independent from Indonesia. The aftermath of a strong military offensive in 2003 and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami brought a peace agreement and an end to the insurgency.
Syiah Kuala University, abbreviated as USK, founded on 2 September 1961, is the largest and the oldest national university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The name of the university is taken from the prominent theologian, Tengku Abdur Rauf As Singkili, who lived in the 16th century.
Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), formerly Jakarta International School, is a private, embassy-backed international school in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was established in 1951 for expatriate students living in Jakarta and is the largest international primary and secondary school in Indonesia. JIS has more than 2,000 students aged 3 to 18 from over 60 nationalities. The school adheres to an American curriculum while taking pieces from other curriculum models from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. Since JIS is an American Overseas School, it is assisted by the US Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools. The United States Department of State reports the curriculum offered at Jakarta Intercultural School "has a strong international focus", and considers it one of the best schools overseas for preparing students for American university entrance. JIS has three campuses, two solely for elementary students in Pattimura and Pondok Indah, and one much bigger and considered the main campus for junior high and high school students in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
Sekolah Laboratorium Unsyiah, also known as SMA Labschool Unsyiah is a community-based school that is a part of the Universitas Syiah Kuala complex in Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia.
An election was held on 9 April 2012 for the governorship and deputy-governorship of Aceh. Incumbent governor Irwandi Yusuf ran as an independent, while former exile and Free Aceh Movement (GAM) activist Zaini Abdullah competed for the governorship on behalf of the Aceh Party with Muzakir Manaf as running mate. The election was the second to take place in the devolved Aceh region since the post-earthquake/tsunami Helsinki agreement between the Indonesian government and the GAM. The previous gubernatorial election in Aceh had been held in December 2006.

Before becoming governor, he was deputy governor in 2017–2018, and served in the People's Representative Council between 2009 and 2014.
