The director of national intelligence (DNI) is a senior,cabinet-level United States government official,required by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 to serve as executive head of the United States Intelligence Community (IC) and to direct and oversee the National Intelligence Program (NIP). All IC agencies report directly to the DNI. The DNI also serves,upon invitation,as an advisor to the president of the United States,the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council on all intelligence matters. The DNI,supported by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI),produces the President's Daily Brief (PDB),a classified document including intelligence from all IC agencies,handed each morning to the president of the United States.
Joseph Cofer Black is an American former CIA officer who served as director of the Counterterrorism Center in the years surrounding the September 11th attacks,and was later appointed Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the State Department by President George W. Bush,serving until his resignation in 2004. Prior to his roles combatting terrorism,Black served across the globe in a variety of roles with the Directorate of Operations at the CIA.
Jose A. Rodriguez Jr. is an American former intelligence officer who served as Director of the National Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He was the final CIA deputy director for operations (DDO) before that position was expanded to D/NCS in December 2004. Rodriguez was a central figure in the 2005 CIA interrogation videotapes destruction,leading to The New York Times Editorial Board and Human Rights Watch to call for his prosecution.
Michael Vincent Hayden is a retired United States Air Force four-star general and former Director of the National Security Agency,Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence,and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He also serves as a professor at the George Mason University –Schar School of Policy and Government. Hayden currently co-chairs the Bipartisan Policy Center's Electric Grid Cyber Security Initiative. In 2017,Hayden became a national security analyst for CNN.
John Owen Brennan is a former American intelligence officer who served as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from March 2013 to January 2017. He served as chief counterterrorism advisor to U.S. President Barack Obama,with the title Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism,and Assistant to the President. Previously,he advised Obama on foreign policy and intelligence issues during the 2008 election campaign and presidential transition.
Michael E. Leiter was the director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC),having served in the Bush Administration and been retained in the Obama Administration. A statement released by the White House announced his resignation,effective July 8,2011. His successor,Matthew G. Olsen,was sworn in on August 16,2011. In September 2017,Leiter joined international law firm Skadden,Arps,Slate,Meagher &Flom in Washington,D.C. as a partner in its national security practice.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's Mission Center forCounterterrorism is a division of the CIA's Directorate of Operations,established in 1986. It was renamed during an agency restructuring in 2015,and is distinct from the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC),which is a separate entity. Vincent Cannistraro was Director of Intelligence Programs for the United States National Security Council (NSC) from 1984 to 1987;Special assistant for Intelligence in the Office of the Secretary of Defense until 1988;and Chief of Operations and Analysis at the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) Counterterrorist Center until 1991.
The Camp Chapman attack was a suicide attack by Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi against the Central Intelligence Agency facility inside Forward Operating Base Chapman on December 30,2009. One of the main tasks of the CIA personnel stationed at the base was to provide intelligence supporting drone attacks in Pakistan. Seven American CIA officers and contractors,an officer of Jordan's intelligence service,and an Afghan working for the CIA were killed when al-Balawi detonated a bomb sewn into a vest he was wearing. Six other American CIA officers were wounded. The bombing was the most lethal attack against the CIA in more than 25 years.
Avril Danica Haines is an American lawyer and senior government official who serves as the director of national intelligence in the Biden administration. She is the first woman to serve in this role. Haines previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor and Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the Obama administration. Prior to her appointment to the CIA,she served as Deputy Counsel to the President for National Security Affairs in the Office of White House Counsel.

Gina Cheri Walker Haspel is an American intelligence officer who was the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from May 21,2018,to January 20,2021. She was the agency's deputy director from 2017 to 2018 under Mike Pompeo,and became acting director on April 26,2018,after Pompeo became U.S. secretary of state. She was later nominated and confirmed to the role,making her the first woman to become CIA director on a permanent basis.

Prior to assuming that role,she was the Deputy Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA),having assumed the position on January 1,2015. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Intelligence Cross,the nation's highest intelligence award for valor,often described as a Medal of Honor equivalent,for his actions to defend Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his troops against an attack on their position by the Taliban in Tarinkot,Afghanistan.
Henry "Hank" A. Crumpton is a retired Central Intelligence Agency operations officer,in his 24 year career he was appointed deputy director of the Counterterrorism Center and head the CIA's National Resources Division,which focuses on operations in the United States. He played an instrumental role in the early days of the invasion of Afghanistan,leading CTC Special Operations paramilitary forces as some of the first people with boots on the ground in pursuit of the Taliban and al-Qaeda just weeks after 9/11. Gary Schroen's seven man Northern Alliance Liaison Team (NALT) forged alliances and established camp in the mountains,while Crumpton crafted a plan for a larger incursion alongside others like Greg Vogle and Chris Wood. He went on to be appointed by President George W. Bush as Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the Department of State with the rank of Ambassador-at-large on August 2,2005. He is an author and co-founder,Chairman,and CEO of the business intelligence and political risk firm Crumpton Global LLC.

The competition took inspiration from the World War II government program Station S,in which civilians were assessed and trained to be spies.
