Darrell Critch is a Canadian-born Anglican bishop. Since December 2024, he has been the third diocesan bishop of Mahajanga, Madagascar, in the Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean. Prior to his election as bishop, he was the founding rector of the Anglican Church of the Good Samaritan in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Early life, education and ordained ministry

Critch is a native of Newfoundland. [1] After receiving music degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland [2] and an M.Div. at Nashotah House, he was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada's Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador. [1] He later received a D.Min. from Nashotah House. [2]

During the Anglican realignment in 2008, while serving as rector of St. Mary the Virgin in St. John's, Critch was removed from his office by then-Bishop Cyrus Pitman. Critch then joined the Anglican Network in Canada and planted Good Samaritan. [3] Good Samaritan worshiped at 27 different locations during its first 12 years, but in 2020, the church received an anonymous CAD2.5 million gift that allowed it to purchase the former Anglican Church of St. Michael and All Angels on 10 St. Clare Road in St. John's. [4] The church, built in 1959, had been deconsecrated and used as a fitness center. [5] The church is also the home of Packer College, ANiC's diocesan seminary, where Critch was founding chaplain. [6] [7] Critch was also a regional archdeacon for ANiC. [2]

Episcopacy

In August 2024, Critch was elected as the third missionary bishop of Mahajanga by the bishops of the Province of the Indian Ocean. He was encouraged to discern a call to Mahajanga by Bill Atwood, the ACNA's dean of international affairs, during the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches' Cairo assembly in June 2024. Critch will continue to live part-time in St. John's, serving at Good Samaritan and fundraising in North America for the Diocese of Mahajanga. [1] According to ANiC Bishop Dan Gifford, part of Critch's role will be to prepare the diocese―which has just 12 priests―to elect indigenous leadership in the future. [8]

Archbishop James Wong consecrated Critch as bishop at the cathedral in Mahajanga on 15 December 2024. [9] Critch was the first priest from the Anglican Church in North America, a GAFCON and Global South province not recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury, to be made a diocesan bishop in an Anglican Communion province. Personal life

Critch is married to Sarah; they have one son and are foster parents. [2]

The Anglican Diocese of Canada is the Canadian diocese of the Anglican Church in North America. Established in 2005, prior to becoming a founding diocese of the ACNA, it originated as a group of congregations and clergy that had left the Anglican Church of Canada to affiliate temporarily with the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone, a province of the Anglican Communion. In 2024, the diocese formally adopted its current name.

The Anglican realignment is a movement among some Anglicans to align themselves under new or alternative oversight within or outside the Anglican Communion. This movement is primarily active in parts of the Episcopal Church in the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada. Two of the major events that contributed to the movement were the 2002 decision of the Diocese of New Westminster in Canada to authorise a rite of blessing for same-sex unions, and the nomination of two openly gay priests in 2003 to become bishops. Jeffrey John, an openly gay priest with a long-time partner, was appointed to be the next Bishop of Reading in the Church of England and the General Convention of the Episcopal Church ratified the election of Gene Robinson, an openly gay non-celibate man, as Bishop of New Hampshire. Jeffrey John ultimately declined the appointment due to pressure.

The Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean is a province of the Anglican Communion. It covers the islands of Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. The current Archbishop and Primate is Gilbert Rateloson Rakotondravelo, Bishop of Fianarantsoa.

The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) is a Christian denomination in the Anglican tradition in the United States and Canada. It also includes ten congregations in Mexico, two mission churches in Guatemala, and a missionary diocese in Cuba. Headquartered in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, the church reported more than 1,000 congregations and more than 128,000 members in 2023. The first archbishop of the ACNA was Robert Duncan, who was succeeded by Foley Beach in 2014. In June 2024, the College of Bishops elected Steve Wood as the third archbishop of the ACNA. Authority was transferred to him during the closing Eucharist at the ACNA Assembly 2024 conference in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

He was previously the Bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador in the Anglican Church of Canada from 1993 to 2004.

Edward Harding "Ed" MacBurney SSC was an American Anglican bishop. He was born in Albany, New York to Alfred Cadwell MacBurney (1896-1986) and Florence Marion McDowell MacBurney (1897-1989). A graduate of Dartmouth College, Berkeley Divinity School, and St Stephen's House, Oxford, he was ordained to the priesthood in December 1952 by the Church of England Bishop of Ely Edward Wynn. He served in the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire at Trinity Episcopal Church, Hanover, from 1953 to 1973 before appointment as dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa from 1973 to 1987. MacBurney served from 1988 to 1994 as the seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Quincy. During the consents process following MacBurney's election, Bishop John Shelby Spong of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark "urged his fellow liberal bishops to encourage their diocesan standing committees to confirm Dean MacBurney's election for the sake of the catholicity of the Church."

Mark Joseph Lawrence is an American bishop. He was the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina from 2008 to 2012, and of the diocese now known as the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina from 2012 to 2022. In November 2012, under his leadership, a large portion of the old diocese withdrew from the national Episcopal Church to become an independent Anglican diocese. They continued to operate under the name "Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina", whose use was disputed by the national Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church did not recognize this diocesan withdrawal, instead considering Lawrence to have abandoned the church and his position as diocesan bishop. Lawrence's diocese affiliated with the Anglican Church in North America in 2017 and in 2019 began referring to itself as the "Anglican Diocese of South Carolina".

Charles Frederick Masters is a Canadian bishop. He served from 2014 to 2022 as moderator bishop of the Anglican Network in Canada within the Anglican Church in North America.

The Anglican Diocese of All Nations is a diocese of the Anglican Church in North America and formerly of the Church of Nigeria North American Mission. It was one of the four missionary dioceses of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, which was founded in 2005. As such, it had a dual church body of the ACNA and the Church of Nigeria in the United States, until May 2019.

Via Apostolica was a missionary district in the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA), comprising a small number of parishes in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Despite being located in Canada, the missionary district clergy were canonically resident in the Anglican Diocese of the Upper Midwest, in the United States. Its founding bishop was Todd Atkinson, who was inhibited from episcopal ministry in 2022 and deposed in 2024. As of 2023, all of Via Apostolica's member congregations and clergy had transferred into the Anglican Network in Canada.

Daniel Christian Gifford is an American-born Canadian bishop of the Anglican Church in North America. In February 2022, he was consecrated as coadjutor bishop of the Anglican Network in Canada and succeeded Charlie Masters as diocesan bishop in November 2022. He was previously archdeacon for the Vancouver area in ANiC and vicar of St. John's Vancouver.

St. John's (Shaughnessy) Memorial Church is an Anglican parish in the Shaughnessy neighborhood of Vancouver. Founded in 1925, the church is part of the Diocese of New Westminster in the Anglican Church of Canada. Once reported to be the largest Anglican church in Canada and a bastion of evangelicalism, most of the congregation and clergy left during the Anglican realignment and the church is today much smaller and aligned with the progressive wing of Canadian Anglicanism.

St. John's Vancouver Anglican Church is an evangelical Anglican church in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was founded in 2011 by the clergy and almost all of the laity of St. John's Shaughnessy after the group left the Anglican Church of Canada over theological and moral issues and the congregation lost a legal battle to keep its building during the Anglican realignment. With more than 700 in regular attendance, it is the largest church in the Anglican Diocese of Canada, a diocese of the Anglican Church in North America.

The Anglican Church of the Good Samaritan is an Anglican church in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Founded in 2008, it is a member of the Anglican Diocese of Canada, which separated from the Anglican Church of Canada. Since 2022, Good Samaritan has been home to Packer College, ANiC's diocesan seminary.

Joseph "Joey" Royal is a Canadian Anglican bishop. From 2019 to 2024, he was one of three suffragan bishops of the Diocese of the Arctic in the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC).

Michael Stewart is a British-born Canadian Anglican bishop. He was consecrated in 2024 as bishop suffragan of the Anglican Diocese of Canada in the Anglican Church in North America, where he serves as area bishop for western Canada. He was previously in parish ministry in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where he participated in the Anglican realignment in the 2000s.

Samuel Hall Speers is an Irish-born Anglican bishop. He served from 2019 to 2024 as the second diocesan bishop of Mahajanga, Madagascar, in the Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean.
