Dave Lucas (born September 29, 1980) is an American poet and essayist. He was the second Poet Laureate of the state of Ohio. [1]

Early life and education

Lucas was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his B.A. at John Carroll University, M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of Virginia, and M.A. and Ph.D. in English language and literature at the University of Michigan. [2]

Career

Lucas's first poetry collection, Weather, was published in 2011 by University of Georgia Press and was awarded the 2012 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. [3] Shortly after publication, former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove named him as one of thirteen “young poets to watch.” [4] His poetry has been anthologized in The Bedford Introduction to Literature and Best New Poets 2005 ; [5] and has appeared in such journals as The American Poetry Review , Blackbird, The Paris Review , Poetry , Slate , The Threepenny Review and Virginia Quarterly Review . [2] He has reviewed books for The Plain Dealer and his essays have appeared in Granta and Virginia Quarterly Review, among other publications. [6] [7] [8]

Lucas has taught at Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic's Program in Medical Humanities, the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, the John Carroll Young Writers Workshop, and the Sweet Briar Creative Writing Conference. [3]

Brews and Prose Literary Series

In 2012, Lucas co-founded Brews and Prose, a monthly literary series hosted at Market Garden Brewery. He served as the program's Creative Director from its inception through 2017. [9] [10]

Ohio Poet Laureate

In January 2018, Ohio Governor John Kasich named Lucas the state's second poet laureate, succeeding Amit Majmudar. [11] Lucas was recommended for the two-year position after a statewide nominating process by the Ohio Poet Laureate Selection Committee. [1]

Rita Dove American poet and author

Rita Frances Dove is an American poet and essayist. From 1993 to 1995, she served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. She is the first African American to have been appointed since the position was created by an act of Congress in 1986 from the previous "consultant in poetry" position (1937–86). Dove also received an appointment as "special consultant in poetry" for the Library of Congress's bicentennial year from 1999 to 2000. Dove is the second African American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, in 1987, and she served as the Poet Laureate of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. Since 1989, she has been teaching at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she held the chair of Commonwealth Professor of English from 1993 to 2020; as of 2020 she holds the chair of Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing.

Mark Strand Canadian-American poet, essayist, translator

Mark Strand was a Canadian-born American poet, essayist and translator. He was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1990 and received the Wallace Stevens Award in 2004. Strand was a professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University from 2005 until his death in 2014.

Cynthia Huntington is an American poet, memoirist and a professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College. In 2004 she was named Poet Laureate of New Hampshire.

Mary Ruefle is an American poet, essayist, and professor. She has published many collections of poetry, the most recent of which, Dunce, was longlisted for the National Book Award in Poetry and was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize. Ruefle's debut collection of prose, The Most Of It, appeared in 2008 and her collected lectures, Madness, Rack, and Honey, was published in August 2012, both published by Wave Books. She has also published a book of erasures, A Little White Shadow (2006).

Cathryn Hankla American poet

Cathryn ("Cathy") Hankla is an American poet, novelist, essayist and author of short stories. She is professor emerita of English and Creative Writing at Hollins University in Hollins, Virginia, and served as inaugural director of Hollins' Jackson Center for Creative Writing from 2008 to 2012.

Martha Collins (poet) American poet

Martha Collins is a poet, translator, and editor. She has published ten books of poetry, including Night Unto Night ,Admit One: An American Scrapbook, Day Unto Day, White Papers, and Blue Front, as well as two chapbooks and four books of co-translations from the Vietnamese. She has also co-edited, with Kevin Prufer and Martin Rock, a volume of poems by Catherine Breese Davis, accompanied by essays and an interview about the poet’s life and work.

Patrick Donnelly (poet) American poet

Patrick Donnelly is an American poet. He is the author of four poetry collections, The ChargeNocturnes of the Brothel of Ruin, Jesus Said, and Little-Known Operas. His poems have appeared in many journals, including The American Poetry Review, The Yale Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Massachusetts Review, Ploughshares, Hayden's Ferry Review, and Slate, and in anthologies including The Book of Irish American Poetry from the 18th Century to the Present, and From the Fishouse: An Anthology of Poems that Sing, Rhyme, Resound, Syncopate, Alliterate, and Just Plain Sound Great.

Beth Ann Fennelly American poet and writer

Beth Ann Fennelly is an American poet and prose writer and was the Poet Laureate of Mississippi.

Paisley Rekdal American poet

Paisley Rekdal is an American poet who is currently serving as Poet Laureate of Utah. She is the author of a book of essays entitled The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee: Observations on Not Fitting In, the memoir Intimate, as well as five books of poetry. For her work, she has received numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Civitella Ranieri Residency, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Pushcart Prizes in both 2009 and 2013, Narrative's Poetry Prize, the AWP Creative Nonfiction Prize, and several other awards from the state arts council. She has been recognized for her poems and essays in The New York Times Magazine, American Poetry Review, The Kenyon Review, The New Republic, Tin House, the Best American Poetry series, and on National Public Radio, among others. She was also a recipient of a 2019 Academy of American Poets' Poets Laureate Fellowship.

Sarah Rose Nordgren is an American poet. She is the author of Darwin’s Mother, and of Best Bones, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize in 2013.

Alison Stine is an American poet and author whose first novel Road Out of Winter won the 2021 Philip K. Dick Award. Her poetry and nonfiction has been published in a number of newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Paris Review, and Tin House.
