Dave Trott is a creative director, copywriter, and author. [1] Trott studied at the Pratt Institute in New York City, majoring in advertising before going on to found the advertising agencies Gold Greenlees Trott, Bainsfair Sharkey Trott and Walsh Trott Chick Smith. [2] In 2004 he was given the D&AD President's Award for lifetime achievement in advertising. [3]

Career history

Dave Trott trained in New York at Carl Ally Inc. He then moved back to London in 1971 as a trainee copywriter at Boase Massimi Pollitt where his campaigns included Pepsi's "Lipsmackinthirstquenchin" and Courage's "Gercha" with John Webster. [4] In 1980, Trott founded the advertising agency GGT with Mike Gold and Mike Greenlees. GGT was behind Toshiba's "Hello Tosh gotta Toshiba", Holsten Pils, Cadbury's Flake, Red Rock Cider, Cadbury's Creme Eggs, LWT posters, and Ariston's "Ariston-and-on-and-on". [5] GGT was voted Agency Of The Year by Campaign magazine, and Most Creative Agency In the World by Advertising Age magazine of New York.

In 1990 Trott left GGT and set up Bainsfair Sharkey Trott, which he left in 1993, [6] He then set up WTCS with Amanda Walsh, Murray Chick, and Gordon Smith. This morphed into CST and in 2011 merged with The Gate London, Trott was the Chairman of The Gate until August 2014 when he left the agency. [7]

In January 2017 he appeared on BBC Radio 4's The Museum of Curiosity . His hypothetical donation to this imaginary museum was a ploughman's lunch which "traditional" dish, as he noted, was invented in the 1960s as a marketing campaign for British cheese. [8]

Published works

In 2010 Trott wrote Creative Mischief, a book which detailed the things he had learned in his 40-year career in advertising. [9] This was followed in 2013 by the release of his book Predatory Thinking: A Masterclass in Out-Thinking the Competition. [10] In 2016, Trott's third book 1+1=3 was released.

The agency originated in 1891 with the George Batten Company, and in 1928, through a merger with Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BDO), the agency became Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn. With more than 15,000 employees at 289 offices in 81 countries, it is the largest of three global networks of agencies in the portfolio of Omnicom Group.

William Bernbach was an American advertising creative director. He was one of the three founders in 1949 of the international advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB). He directed many of the firm's breakthrough ad campaigns and had a lasting impact on the creative team structures now commonly used by ad agencies.

TBWA\Chiat\Day American advertising agency

TBWA\Chiat\Day is the American division of the advertising agency TBWA Worldwide. Created in the 1995 merger of TBWA and Chiat/Day, the agency operates offices in Los Angeles, New York City, Nashville, and Mexico City. Prior to the merger, Chiat/Day created internationally notable advertising, including "1984" for Apple Computer, the advertisement that introduced the Macintosh computer. The merger also inspired the creation of the ad agency St.Lukes by Chiat/Day's London office's employees.

Mary Wells Lawrence

Mary Wells Lawrence is a retired American advertising executive. She was the founding president of Wells, Rich, Greene, an advertising agency known for its creative work. Lawrence was the first female CEO of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Mary Wells Lawrence was awarded the Lion of St. Mark for her lifetime achievements at the 2020 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity.

Helen Bayless Lansdowne Resor was an American advertising executive with J. Walter Thompson Co.. A noted copywriter, she was posthumously inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 1967. Resor is credited as the first woman in American history to design and implement national advertising campaigns (source). She was named #14 on the list of 100 Advertising people of the 20th Century by Advertising Age.

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), incorporated by Royal Charter is the trade body and professional institute for agencies in the UK's advertising, media and marketing communications industry. It covers all aspects of the agency business: creative, digital marketing, direct marketing, healthcare, media, out-of-home advertising, sales promotion and sponsorship sectors. It currently has around 300 agency members.

<i>Gorilla</i> (advertisement)

Gorilla is a British advertising campaign launched by the advertising agency Fallon London on behalf of Cadbury Schweppes in 2007, to promote Cadbury Dairy Milk brand chocolate. The centrepiece of the campaign was a 90-second television and cinema advertisement, supported by related media purchases in billboards, magazines and newspapers, as well as sponsored events and an organised internet presence. The total cost of the campaign is estimated at £6.2 million. The central television advertisement was created and directed by Juan Cabral and starred the actor Garon Michael.

Crawford's Advertising Agency, formally WS Crawford Ltd, was one of the most important British advertising agencies of the first half of the 20th century. It was responsible for introducing a highly visual style more influenced by European artistic movements such as modernism and futurism than by traditional American marketing techniques. The agency owed its success largely to two men, its founder Sir William Crawford and the legendary art director Ashley Havinden. Underdog (advertising character) National Accident Helpline mascot

Underdog is a character developed by The Gate London advertising agency and animated by Aardman Animations. The character is featured in advertisements for the personal injury claims company, National Accident Helpline, a UK-based provider of personal injury services.

Steve Harrison is a British copywriter, creative director and author who is regarded by Campaign Magazine as the greatest Direct Marketing Creative of his generation. He has won more Cannes Lions awards than any other Creative Director in the World.

John Salmon (advertising executive)

John Michael Salmon, known as "Smokey" Salmon, was an advertising executive who was known for his role at Collett Dickenson Pearce (CDP) and for "firing" the Ford Motor Company as a client after their public relations department attempted to interfere with his agency's creative process.
