Bellator MMA is an American mixed martial arts promotion based in Santa Monica, California that is owned and operated as a subsidiary of Viacom. It is one of the largest MMA promotions in the world and features many of the upper echelon athletes in combat sports. Its first event was held in 2009, with 222 "numbered" events held as of June 2019. The word Bellator is Latin for "warrior". The company was previously known as Bellator Fighting Championships

Background

Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, Vitkay competed in ice hockey and baseball growing up. He began training in martial arts and MMA upon moving to Atlanta, Georgia, where he also works as a trainer.

Detroit Largest city in Michigan

Detroit is the largest and most populous city in the U.S. state of Michigan, the largest American city on the United States–Canada border, and the seat of Wayne County. The municipality of Detroit had a 2017 estimated population of 673,104, making it the 23rd-most populous city in the United States. The metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, is home to 4.3 million people, making it the second-largest in the Midwest after the Chicago metropolitan area. Regarded as a major cultural center, Detroit is known for its contributions to music and as a repository for art, architecture and design.

Ice hockey team sport played on ice using sticks, skates, and a puck

Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.

Baseball team sport

Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns batting and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive team is to hit the ball into the field of play, allowing it to run the bases—having its runners advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called "runs". The objective of the defensive team is to prevent batters from becoming runners, and to prevent runners' advance around the bases. A run is scored when a runner legally advances around the bases in order and touches home plate. The team that scores the most runs by the end of the game is the winner.

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Vitkay began training in mixed martial arts at the age of 20 and made his professional debut in 2002. [1] Vitkay compiled an overall record of 11-12-1 before being signed by Bellator.

Mixed martial arts full contact combat sport

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from various combat sports and martial arts. The first documented use of the term mixed martial arts was in a review of UFC 1 by television critic Howard Rosenberg in 1993. The term gained popularity when newfullcontact.com, then one of the largest websites covering the sport, hosted and republished the article. The question of who actually coined the term is subject to debate.

Bellator MMA

Vitkay was expected to make his Bellator debut on February 7, 2013 against then-undefeated Kelvin Tiller at Bellator 88. However, Tiller failed to make weight and the fight was subsequently cancelled. [2]

Kelvin Tiller is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in the light heavyweight division. A professional competitor since 2011, Tiller has also formerly competed for Bellator, World Series of Fighting and Shark Fights.

Vitkay made his Bellator debut on March 21, 2013 at Bellator 93 against Jesse Peterson. Vitkay won the fight via technical submission due to a guillotine choke, just 18 seconds into the first round. [3]

Vitkay was then expected to face Brennan Ward at Bellator 98 on September 7, 2013. However, Vitkay was removed from the event after Ward was called to replace Andreas Spång against Justin Torrey in the quarterfinals of the Bellator season nine middleweight tournament at the same event. [4]

Brennan Ward is a retired American professional mixed martial artist who most recently competed for Bellator MMA. A professional competitor since 2008, Ward formerly competed for CES MMA and was the Bellator Season Nine Middleweight Tournament Winner.

Andreas Christian Spång is a Swedish professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who most recently competed in the Heavyweight division. A professional competitor since 2008, he has competed for Bellator, the MFC, and Strikeforce.

Justin Torrey is an American mixed martial artist currently competing in the Middleweight division of the World Series of Fighting. A professional competitor since 2003, he has formerly competed for Bellator.

Vitkay faced Tyson Jeffries at Bellator 101 on September 27, 2013. Vitkay won via third-round rear-naked choke submission. [5]

In his next appearance, Vitkay faced Keith Berry at Bellator 116 on April 11, 2014. Vitkay won via unanimous decision. [6]
