David Phillip Abney (born c. 1956) is an American business executive. He is the former executive chairman of United Parcel Service (UPS), having previously served as chairman and CEO from September 2014 to May 2020. (UPS). [1]

Abney was born circa 1956. [2] He grew up in Greenwood, Mississippi. [3] He graduated from Delta State University in 1976. [3] [4] [5]

Career

Abney began his career for UPS in college. [3] [4] He was chief operating officer from 2007 to 2014. [2] He has served as its chairman and chief executive officer from 2014 to 2020. [2] [3]

Abney formerly served on the board of directors Johnson Controls. [5]

Personal life

Abney is married to Sherry, his college sweetheart. [2] He serves on the board of his alma mater, Delta State University. [6]

Awards and honors

In 2021, Abney was named a Georgia Trustee by the Georgia Historical Society, in conjunction with the Office of the Governor of Georgia, to recognize accomplishments and community service that reflect the ideals of the founding body of Trustees, which governed the Georgia colony from 1732 to 1752.

The Trustees for the Establishment of the Colony of Georgia in America, or simply the Georgia Trustees, was organized by James Edward Oglethorpe and associates following parliamentary investigations into prison conditions in Britain.
