Pre-trial detention,also known as preventive detention,provisional detention,or remand is the process of detaining a person until their trial after they have been arrested and charged with an offence. A person who is on remand is held in a prison or detention centre or held under house arrest. Varying terminology is used,but "remand" is generally used in common law jurisdictions and "preventive detention" elsewhere. However,in the United States,"remand" is rare except in official documents and "kept in custody until trial" is used in the media and even by judges and lawyers in addressing the public. Detention before charge is referred to as custody and continued detention after conviction is referred to as imprisonment.

Leifer's trial did not address other alleged sex crimes in Israel and the West Bank because they did not occur in Australia.
On January 10,2018,19-year-old University of Pennsylvania sophomore Blaze Bernstein was found dead in a park in Orange County,California,eight days after having been reported missing. He was visiting his family in Lake Forest,California,when he was killed. He had been stabbed nineteen times. Two days later,Samuel Woodward,one of Bernstein's former high school classmates and a member of neo-Nazi terrorist group Atomwaffen Division,was arrested and charged with murdering Bernstein. As Bernstein was both openly gay and Jewish,authorities declared that Bernstein was a victim of a hate crime. Five deaths had links to the Atomwaffen Division over eight months from 2017 to early 2018.
Chrystul Kizer was arrested at age 17 for the murder of Randall Phillip Volar III. During her arrest,she claimed Volar was her sex trafficker. On June 5,2018,she allegedly shot him twice while he was sitting in a chair,set his house on fire,then stole his car. Kizer was arrested and incarcerated at Kenosha County Detention Facility to await trial. Kenosha County prosecutors charged her with first degree intentional homicide using a dangerous weapon,and four other felonies. They contend the killing was premeditated. If convicted,she would face a mandatory life sentence in prison.
John David Norman was an American pedophile and sex offender convicted numerous times between 1960 and 1998 on charges of child molestation and child pornography. Throughout his life,Norman operated various direct mailing services dedicated to distributing child pornography and arranging sex trafficking. Among these operations were the Odyssey Foundation based out of Dallas;the Delta Project,Creative Corps and M-C Publications based out of Chicago;and Handy Andy based out of Pennsylvania.
