David Collins KC (born 18 March 1954) is a retired judge of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand. [1] He is an acting judge of the Court of Appeal until 18 March 2026. [2] He was the Solicitor-General of New Zealand from 1 September 2006 to 15 March 2012,before being made a judge of the High Court in 2012. [3] [4]
Collins graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a LL.B.(Hons) (1st Class) in 1975 and an LL.M. in 1976. He was awarded an LL.D. by Victoria University in 1993. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Law at Victoria University. [5] He also has a LL.M. Judicial Studies from Duke University School of Law in the United States. [6]
Collins was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1976. He was admitted to the State of Victoria Bar and the High Court of Australia Bar in 1986. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000. [7]
Upon graduating from Victoria University in 1975,Collins took up a three-month research position at Rhyne &Rhyne in Washington DC. After this role concluded he returned to New Zealand and completed his LL.M. He commenced a two-year clerkship for the Judges of the High Court and Court of Appeal of New Zealand between 1976 and 1978.
In 1979,Collins commenced practicing law in Wellington as a solicitor for Chapman Tripp. In 1982 he was admitted to partnership in a firm that subsequently merged and is today known as Rainey Collins. He remained at the firm until 1995. In 1996 he left practice to become a barrister. During this period he conducted several appeals before the Privy Council in London. He took silk in 2000.
Prior to his appointment as Solicitor-General,Collins was Chair of the Accident Compensation Commission,and Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. Collins has served terms as President of the Wellington District Law Society,vice-president of the New Zealand Law Society,and Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Governors,World Association of Law and Medicine. [5] In 2006,Collins was appointed Solicitor-General. He remained in this role until he was appointed a High Court Judge. [5]

Collins has authored a textbook, [8] and has been a contributory author for three other texts. [9] [10] [11] He has written a number of articles.
Collins has been actively involved in mountaineering and tramping. [8]
Robin Brunskill Cooke,Baron Cooke of Thorndon,was a New Zealand judge and later a British Law Lord and member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. He is widely considered one of New Zealand's most influential jurists,and is the only New Zealand judge to have sat in the House of Lords. He was a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong from 1997 to 2006.
The Supreme Court of New Zealand is the highest court and the court of last resort of New Zealand. It formally came into being on 1 January 2004 and sat for the first time on 1 July 2004. It replaced the right of appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council,based in London. It was created with the passing of the Supreme Court Act 2003,on 15 October 2003. At the time,the creation of the Supreme Court and the abolition of appeals to the Privy Council were controversial constitutional changes in New Zealand. The Supreme Court Act 2003 was repealed on 1 March 2017 and superseded by the Senior Courts Act 2016.

The Court of Appeal of New Zealand is the principal intermediate appellate court of New Zealand. It is also the final appellate court for a number of matters. In practice,most appeals are resolved at this intermediate appellate level,rather than in the Supreme Court. The Court of Appeal has existed as a separate court since 1862 but,until 1957,it was composed of judges of the High Court sitting periodically in panels. In 1957 the Court of Appeal was reconstituted as a permanent court separate from the High Court. It is located in Wellington.
William Kenneth Hastings is a Canadian-born judge who served as the tenth Chief Censor of New Zealand from October 1999 to July 2010. He was chairman of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal from July 2010 until February 2013,and is currently a District Court Judge. He was the chair of the Broadcasting Standards Authority from October 2018 until August 2021. He was sworn in as the tenth Judge of the Court Martial of New Zealand on 20 July 2021. On 9 August 2021,Hastings was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Republic of Kiribati,a position he held until 8 December 2022. He was a member of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of Vanuatu from July 2023 to June 2024.

William McLeod Wilson is a former judge of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of New Zealand. In 2010,he became the first New Zealand judge to resign after being accused of judicial misconduct. Wilson was subjected to the first report by the Judicial Conduct Commissioner,which recommended a Judicial Conduct Panel be formed. This report of the Commissioner was prematurely released to the press and subsequent media attention forced Wilson's resignation from the Supreme Court.
Dame Lowell Patria Goddard,is a former New Zealand High Court judge,from 1995 to 2015. She is thought to be the first person of Māori ancestry to have been appointed to the High Court. In 1988,she was one of the first two women to be appointed Queen's Counsel in New Zealand and in 1989 became the first woman to hold a Crown warrant. In 1992,she became Deputy Solicitor-General for New Zealand. Between 2007 and 2012 she chaired New Zealand's Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA). In 2010 she was elected as an independent expert to the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture (SPT) and served in that capacity until 2016. From February 2015 until August 2016,she chaired the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales.

Antony "Tony" Shaw is a barrister of the High Court of New Zealand,and a former lecturer of law at Victoria University. He holds an LLB and BA from Auckland University. His practice covers civil and criminal matters. He is regarded as an expert on human rights law. Shaw has appeared widely in the District and High Courts of New Zealand including successful appeals to the Court of Appeal,Privy Council and the New Zealand Supreme Court. Shaw has also appeared in the Employment Court of New Zealand and regularly appears before the New Zealand Parole Board.
Sally Erin Fitzgerald is a New Zealand judge who assumed the role of Chief Judge of the High Court on 20 December 2023,following the appointment made by Attorney-General Judith Collins.
