Its county seat and most populous city is Fort Lauderdale,which had a population of 182,760 as of 2020. The county is part of the South Florida region of the state.

The Julia Tuttle Causeway sex offender colony was an encampment of banished,registered sex offenders who were living beneath the Julia Tuttle Causeway—a highway connecting Miami,Florida to Miami Beach,Florida,United States—from 2006 to April 2010. The colony was created by a lobbyist named Ron Book,who wrote ordinances in several different Miami-Dade County cities to restrict convicted sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet (760 m) of schools,parks,bus stops,or homeless shelters. Since Book was also head of the Miami Homeless Trust,he was also in charge of finding housing for the released sexual offenders. Under these ordinances,the only areas where sex offenders could legally reside within Miami-Dade County were the Miami Airport and the Florida Everglades. Miami-Dade laws are significantly stricter than State of Florida laws on residency restrictions for sex offenders. Florida state law required that no sex offender could live within 1,000 feet (300 m) from "where children gather". Under that requirement,housing was possible;however,because of Book's lobbying,the Dade County Commission increased that number to 2,500 feet (760 m),thereby banishing hundreds of local citizens who then began gathering under the Julia Tuttle Causeway.

Lesbian,gay,bisexual,and transgender (LGBTQ) people in the U.S. state of Florida have federal protections,but many face legal difficulties on the state level that are not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Same-sex sexual activity became legal in the state after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Lawrence v. Texas on June 26,2003,although the state legislature has not repealed its sodomy law. Same-sex marriage has been legal in the state since January 6,2015. Discrimination on account of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment,housing and public accommodations is outlawed following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County. In addition,several cities and counties,comprising about 55 percent of Florida's population,have enacted anti-discrimination ordinances. These include Jacksonville,Miami,Tampa,Orlando,St. Petersburg,Tallahassee and West Palm Beach,among others. Conversion therapy is also banned in a number of cities in the state,mainly in the Miami metropolitan area,but has been struck down by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. In September 2023,Lake Worth Beach,Florida became an official "LGBT sanctuary city" to protect and defend LGBT rights.
Robert Julio Garcia is a Peruvian American politician and educator serving as the U.S. representative for California's 42nd congressional district since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party,he served as the 28th mayor of Long Beach,California from 2014 to 2022. He was both the city's youngest and first elected openly LGBT mayor,as well as the first Latino to hold the office. He is the second person of color to be mayor of Long Beach,after Republican Eunice Sato,a Japanese-American who served from 1980 to 1982. A former member of the Long Beach City Council,he was vice mayor from 2012 to 2014.

Of this high number,2,846 are family households,2,019 are unaccompanied young adults,2,817 are veterans,and an estimated 5,615 are individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. According to a January 2020 count,this figure was 27,487 on any given day,a decrease from previous years. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,as of December 2022,the estimate for homeless individuals has dropped to 25,959,about 5% of the total U.S. population. This is in spite of fears that moratorium's on evictions ending could lead to an increase in the homeless population.
The mayor of Miami Beach is the nonpartisan chief executive of the municipal government of Miami Beach,Florida,and the presiding member of its seven-member City Commission. Modern-day mayors are elected to two-year terms and are term-limited to no more than 3 terms,which can be consecutive or non-consecutive. The mayor and other members of the City Commission appoint a city manager to administer the day-to-day affairs and operations of City Hall and its various departments. City Hall is located at 1700 Convention Center Drive;the mayor's office is located on the fourth floor.
