David G. A. Douglas (born 16 March 1947) is an Australian former rower. He was a five-time Australian national champion, won a gold medal at the inaugural North American rowing championships in 1967 and won a silver medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Douglas was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and was educated at Scotch College where he was introduced to rowing. He rowed in the school's 2nd VIII in 1965 and the senior VIII in 1966. [1] His senior rowing was from the Mercantile Rowing Club where he had a long association.
He first made state selection for Victoria in the 1967 men's eight which contested the King's Cup at the annual Interstate Regatta. [2] He then rowed in further Victorian eights at the Interstate Regattas in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971. [3] Those crews won the King's Cup on three consecutive occasions from 1969 to 1971. [3] After a long break he made a comeback to elite rowing in 1980 and that year rowed in the two seat of another winning Victorian King's Cup eight. [4]
At the 1968 Australian Rowing Championships in a composite Mercantile/MUBC crew Douglas, Graeme Boykett, John Harry, Stephen Gillon, and cox Tom Daffy won the Australian coxed four title. [5]
In 1967 all-Victorian coxed four of Douglas, Boykett, Harry, Gillon, and Daffy was selected as Australian representatives to race at the US championships, the inaugural North American championships and the European Championships. [3] They fared well placing second in the US and winning the North American championship in St Catharines. [6]
In 1968 Douglas was the sole Victorian added to the New South Wales crew which made up the Australian men's eight for the Mexico Olympics. [3] He was seated at three for their Olympic campaign and silver medal victory in Mexico City. [7]
For the 1970 World Rowing Championships in St Catharines, Douglas was in the six seat of the Australian eight which rowed to a fifth placing in the final. [8]
After competitive retirement Douglas was Chairman of selectors at Mercantile Rowing Club for a number of years. [9] In 2010 he was inducted as a member of the Rowing Victoria Hall of Fame.
His daughter Gina Douglas is also an Australian national representative rower. She competed at six world championships and at the Atlanta 1996 in the women's eight and at Sydney 2000 as a single sculler. [10] David's son Robert Douglas rowed in the Australian men's eight at the 2001 and the 2002 World Rowing Championships. [11]
Drew Cameron Ginn OAM is an Australian five-time world champion rower, a four time Olympian and triple Olympic gold medallist. From 1995 to 1998 he was a member of Australia's prominent world class crew – the coxless four known as the Oarsome Foursome.
Harold Neil Hewitt is an Australian rowing coxswain. He was a Victorian state and Australian national champion who competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics where he won a bronze medal in the men's eight.
Nicholas Weston Porzig is a South African-born, former Australian representative former rower. He is a dual Olympian and an Olympic silver medalist.
Brett Hayman is an Australian three time world champion, a dual Olympian and an Australian national champion rowing coxswain. He won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics steering the Australian men's eight. He coxed Australian crews at every premier world rowing regatta from 1993 to 2000.
Benjamin Philip Dodwell is an Australian former rower - a nine-time national champion, a triple Olympian, Olympic medal winner and representative at World Rowing Championships.
Paul Marshall Guest OAM, is an Australian former representative rower, a family law barrister and Queen's Counsel who spent ten years as a judge on the bench of the Family Court of Australia. As a rower, he was a six-time Australian national champion, raced in nine King's Cup eights for Victoria over a 15-year period, and competed at three Olympic Games. As a Family Court justice, Guest's pivotal ruling in the "Re Patrick" case dealt with the complex area of known sperm donor's rights under the Family Law Act. Guest is a collector and benefactor of contemporary art whose personal collection has been lent for display to a number of prominent Australian galleries.
David Ramage is an Australian former rower. He was a five time national champion who won a Commonwealth Games silver medal and competed at two Olympic Games. He was still winning gold medals at World Masters Championships in 2015.
James Rook is an Australian national representative rowing coxswain. He is an Olympian and a medallist at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 World Rowing Championships and a winner of the Remenham Challenge Cup at the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta. He is notable for becoming in 2018 the first Australian male coxswain to steer a representative Australian female crew under the FISA gender-neutral coxswain selection policy change of 2017. He coxed the Australian women's eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Angus Widdicombe is an Australian rower. He is an Olympian, an Australian national champion, has represented at underage and senior world championships, winning consecutive silver medals at the 2017 and 2018 World Championships. He stroked the Australian men's eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Ian Porter is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a four-time Australian national champion and won two bronze medals at World Rowing Championships.
Pamela Westendorf is an Australian former lightweight rower. She won twenty-three Australian national championships, was an Olympian, represented at five World Championships over a twelve-year period and won a silver medal at the 1990 World Rowing Championships.
Adrian Maginn is an Australian former rowing coxswain and rowing coach. He was a five-time national champion and won a bronze medal at the 1978 World Rowing Championships.
Vaughan Bollen is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is from a prominent South Australian rowing family, was a seven-time Australian national champion and won a bronze medal at the 1978 World Rowing Championships. He competed over an eighteen-year period in events at the annual Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships firstly as a South Australian King's Cup coxswain from 1961, then as a South Australian Presidents Cup rower from 1967 and finally till 1979, as a Victorian state representative President's Cup rower.
Richard Garrard is an Australian former rower. He was a seven-time Australian national champion who rowed at the elite level for a fifteen-year period from 1964-79. He competed in the men's coxless four event at the 1964 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 1977 World Rowing Championships.
Kerry Peter Jelbart is an Australian former representative rower. He competed in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics and twice at World Rowing Championships.
John Clark is an Australian former rower. He was a six-time national champion who competed at world championships and in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics.
