David Hartt is a Canadian artist and educator living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hartt works across various media to examine the transformation of ideas and histories over time.
Hartt received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa in 1991 and a Master in Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994.
Hartt travels extensively to develop his research based work. [1] [2] In 2015, Hartt was included in the survey Ocean of Images: New Photography 2015 at the Museum of Modern Art. [3] In the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017, Hartt produced a series of interventions on Habitat Puerto Rico, a housing development initially designed by Moshe Safdie and subsequently abandoned by the Puerto Rican government in the 1970s. [4] By placing videos, sculpture, sound, photographs alongside plants and other biomaterials, Hartt attempted to investigate the site not as the development it was intended to be but as what it became. [5]
‘What's interesting is not only the response to the failed utopia, but really using Safdie's project as evidence of which to examine the contemporary context of Puerto Rico, looking its status as colonial state, the debt crisis, the failures of new liberalism. For me it's an amplifier, it's a way through which I can begin to explore these ideas.’ [6]
In 2021, the Philadelphia Museum of Art celebrated their reopening after a $228 million reconstruction with the exhibition New Grit: Art & Philly Now in which Hartt is featured. [7] He is an assistant professor in the Department of Fine Art at the University of Pennsylvania. [8] Hartt is represented by David Nolan Gallery. He is also a founding member of the Black Reconstruction Collective. [9]
Hartt was honored by the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at their fifth gala event in 2019. He was invited by fellow artist Christopher Williams who cited Hartt as an influence on his practice. [10] The Harvard Graduate School of Design selected Hartt as a juror for their Wheelwright Prize in 2021. [11]
Moshe Safdie is an architect, urban planner, educator, theorist, and author. He is known for incorporating principles of socially responsible design throughout his six-decade career. His projects include cultural, educational, and civic institutions; neighborhoods and public parks; housing; mixed-use urban centers; airports; and master plans for existing communities and entirely new cities in the Americas, the Middle East, and Asia. Safdie is most identified with designing Marina Bay Sands and Jewel Changi Airport, as well as his debut project Habitat 67, which was originally conceived as his thesis at McGill University. He holds legal citizenship in Israel, Canada, and the United States.
The Nuyorican movement is a cultural and intellectual movement involving poets, writers, musicians and artists who are Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican descent, who live in or near New York City, and either call themselves or are known as Nuyoricans. It originated in the late 1960s and early 1970s in neighborhoods such as Loisaida, East Harlem, Williamsburg, and the South Bronx as a means to validate Puerto Rican experience in the United States, particularly for poor and working-class people who suffered from marginalization, ostracism, and discrimination.
Jack Delano was a Ukrainian immigrant who became an accomplished photographer for the Works Progress Administration, United Fund, and most notably, the Farm Security Administration (FSA). He wore many hats as he also was a composer known for his use of Puerto Rican folk material, started a television production company, and was a cartoonist, poet, moviemaker, professor, and architectural designer.
Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) is an art museum located on Avenida Las Américas in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It houses a collection of European art, as well as works by Puerto Rican artists. The museum contains one of the most important Pre-Raphaelite collections in the Western Hemisphere, holding some 4,500 pieces of art distributed among fourteen galleries.
