The United States competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. It was the first Summer Olympics in which the athletes marched under the present flag. 292 competitors, 241 men and 51 women, took part in 147 events in 17 sports. The 1960 Summer Olympics was the first Olympics in history that was being covered by a television provider. American network CBS became the first-ever official broadcaster of the games, by purchasing the rights to cover the Rome Olympics. The 1960 Summer Olympics also brought one of the first appearances of one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever, Muhammad Ali. Since these Olympic Games occurred before his conversion to Islam, he fought under the name Cassius Clay.

British Guiana competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. Four competitors, all men, took part in seven events in three sports. It was the first time that the nation competed at the Olympic Games.

Randall Scott Lewis is an American wrestler and Olympic champion. He competed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he won the gold medal in freestyle at featherweight. After winning three high school state titles in South Dakota, he became a four-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion at the University of Iowa. A two-time Olympian, and 1984 Olympic champion in Los Angeles, Lewis was a member of 1980 Olympic team, but President Jimmy Carter's boycott prevented the U.S. team from traveling to the Games in Moscow. Lewis won the gold medal at 136.5 pounds in freestyle wrestling at the 1984 Olympics Games, outscoring his first four opponents 52-4 to advance to the final, where he crushed Japan's Kosei Akaishi 24-11 in 4:52. He was second in the 1988 Olympic trials to John Smith, who wound up winning the gold medal. Lewis was also 1983 Pan American Games champion.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The year's team included two athletes engaged in track and field events, and was accompanied by the team coach, manager, and chaperone. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' appearance in Beijing marked its sixth consecutive Olympic appearance since its 1988 debut in Seoul, South Korea, and its smallest delegation to date. Alexander bore the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the opening ceremony and neither athlete medaled in their events or advanced to later rounds.
