Minnesota is a state in the Upper Midwestern region of the United States. It is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario to the north and east and by the U.S. states of Wisconsin to the east,Iowa to the south,and North Dakota and South Dakota to the west. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA),also known as Indian Affairs (IA),is a United States federal agency within the Department of the Interior. It is responsible for implementing federal laws and policies related to Native Americans and Alaska Natives,and administering and managing over 55,700,000 acres (225,000 km2) of reservations held in trust by the U.S. federal government for indigenous tribes. It renders services to roughly 2 million indigenous Americans across 574 federally recognized tribes. The Red Lake Indian Reservation covers 1,260.3 sq mi in parts of nine counties in Minnesota,United States. It is made up of numerous holdings but the largest section is an area around Red Lake,in north-central Minnesota,the largest lake in the state. This section lies primarily in the counties of Beltrami and Clearwater. Land in seven other counties is also part of the reservation. The reservation population was 5,506 in the 2020 census.
The Fond du Lac Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in northern Minnesota near Cloquet in Carlton and Saint Louis counties. Off-reservation holdings are located across the state in Douglas County,in the northwest corner of Wisconsin. The total land area of these tribal lands is 154.49 square miles (400.1 km2). It is the land-base for the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Before the establishment of this reservation,the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa were located at the head of Lake Superior,closer to the mouth of the Saint Louis River,where Duluth has developed.
The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe,also known as the Mille Lacs Band of Chippewa Indians, is a federally recognized American Indian tribe in east-central Minnesota. The Band has 4,302 members as of 2012. Its homeland is the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation,consisting of District I,District II,District IIa,and District III.

The Brothertown Indians,located in Wisconsin,are a Native American tribe formed in the late 18th century from communities descended from Pequot,Narragansett,Montauk,Tunxis,Niantic,and Mohegan (Algonquian-speaking) tribes of southern New England and eastern Long Island,New York. Ada Elizabeth Deer was an American scholar and civil servant who was a member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and a Native American advocate. As an activist she opposed the federal termination of tribes from the 1950s. During the Clinton administration,Deer served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs. Due to all of her advocacy and organization on behalf of Native people,she was recognized as a social work pioneer by the National Associate of Social Workers in 2010.
