Numismatics is the study or collection of currency,including coins,tokens,paper money,medals and related objects.
The solidus or nomisma was a highly pure gold coin issued in the Later Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire. The early 4th century saw the solidus introduced in mintage as a successor to the aureus,which was permanently replaced thereafter by the new coin,whose weight of about 4.5 grams remained relatively constant for seven centuries.

The American Numismatic Society (ANS) is a New York City-based organization dedicated to the study of coins,money,medals,tokens,and related objects. Founded in 1858,it is the only American museum devoted exclusively to their preservation and study. Its collection encompasses nearly one million items,including medals and paper money,as well as the world's most comprehensive library of numismatic literature. The current president of the society,Dr. Ute Wartenberg,served as the executive director for two decades and was succeeded in this role by Dr. Gilles Bransbourg.
Studien zu Fundmünzen der Antike is a monograph series covering the analysis of ancient coin finds in an archaeological context. Monographs or individual contributions to monographs are published in English,French,Italian,or German. The series was established in 1979. From 1979 to 2000 it was published by Gebr. Mann Verlag (Berlin). Since 2000,the series is published by Philipp von Zabern Verlag (Mainz). The series editors are Hans-Markus von Kaenel and Maria R.-Alföldi. The series is produced under the auspices of the Fundmünzen der Antike project. The project is also responsible for another monograph series,Fundmünzen der römischen Zeit in Deutschland,which catalogs coin finds from excavations,surveys,coin hoards,and local collections in the area of modern Germany.
The Treasure Valuation Committee (TVC) is an advisory non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture,Media and Sport (DCMS) based in London,which offers expert advice to the government on items of declared treasure in England,Wales,and Northern Ireland that museums there may wish to acquire from the Crown.
Joe Cribb is a numismatist,specialising in Asian coinages,and in particular on coins of the Kushan Empire. His catalogues of Chinese silver currency ingots,and of ritual coins of Southeast Asia were the first detailed works on these subjects in English. With David Jongeward he published a catalogue of Kushan,Kushano-Sasanian and Kidarite Hun coins in the American Numismatic Society New York in 2015. In 2021 he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Numismatics at Hebei Normal University,China.
Agnes Baldwin Brett was an American numismatist and archaeologist who worked as the Curator at the American Numismatic Society from 1910 to 1913. She was the first paid curator at the American Numismatic Society. She made important contributions to the study of ancient coinage,medals,and sculpture,whose work was used by later archaeologists. Brett was also a visiting lecturer of archaeology at Columbia University in 1936.
A numismatist is a specialist,researcher,and/or well-informed collector of numismatics/coins. Numismatists can include collectors,specialist dealers,and scholar-researchers who use coins in object-based research. Although use of the term numismatics was first recorded in English in 1799,people had been collecting and studying coins long before then all over the world.

Haim Gitler is an Israeli curator and researcher,specializing in the field of numismatics. He is chief curator of archaeology and curator of numismatics at the Israel Museum,Jerusalem,as well as the President of the Israel Numismatic Society.
The Sachsenpfennig,sometimes called the Wendenpfennig or the Hochrandpfennig,was a well-known coin of the pfennig type minted in the eastern part of the Stem Duchy of Saxony during the 10th and 11th centuries. It had an upturned perimeter and,next to the Otto Adelheid Pfennig was the most common pfennig type of its time. Sachsenpfennigs are the oldest coins minted in Saxony. Its different names represent a lack of clarity within mediaeval numismatics about the coin.
Eva Kolníková is a Slovak numismatist. She specialises in the Celtic coinage of Slovakia,as well as the importance of coinage with relation to Roman-Germanic interactions. She has had marked success in disentangling the complex relationships between the coinages and publishing them accessibly. Research projects have included the cataloguing of coin finds from Němčice nad Hanou,the Bratislava Castle hoard,amongst others.
