Air Commodore Dawn Allison McCafferty CBE , is a former officer of both the RAF Reserve and the regular Royal Air Force. She was appointed as Commandant Air Cadets in August 2012, taking over from Barbara Cooper. She retired in July 2020 and was succeeded by Gp Capt John Lawlor as Acting Commandant. [1]
McCafferty, who was born in the Rhondda South Wales, and later lived in Wigston Magna, joined the RAF at the age of 19 for a four-year short service commission as a secretarial officer. She retired as a group captain in 2006, having completed 23 years of Regular service. [2]
McCafferty's career culminated in her appointment as Inspector of Recruiting for the RAF. She had previously commanded the personnel management squadron at RAF Wittering and the administrative wing at RAF Waddington. She completed staff tours in Command Headquarters and in the Ministry of Defence. After leaving the RAF in 2006, McCafferty set up and ran the Royal Air Force Families Federation from its inception in 2007 until 2012. [3]
McCafferty was appointed Commandant Air Cadets in 2012, initially on a four-year appointment. In 2015, it was confirmed that she would continue in the post until 2020, where she retired in July. [4] [5]
McCafferty was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours. [6]
McCafferty resides in Cornwall. She is also married to her husband and has two children by her former husband Paul.[ citation needed ]
Air commodore is a air officer rank used by some air forces, with origins from the Royal Air Force. The rank is also used by the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence and it is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure.
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) is the combined volunteer-military youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force, which is formed by both the Air Training Corps and RAF Sections of the Combined Cadet Force. The organisation is headed by a former serving RAF officer, Commandant Air Cadets. The current commandant is Air Commodore Tony Keeling.

The Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch), often abbreviated to RAFVR(T), was a Volunteer Reserve element of the Royal Air Force specifically appointed in a cadet training role within the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Members of the RAFVR(T) had no call-up liability and often operated part-time with the Air Experience Flights and Volunteer Gliding Squadrons, which provide flight experience for the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.
Commandant Air Cadets is the title given to the Royal Air Force officer who is responsible for running the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, embracing the Air Training Corps (ATC) and the RAF Sections of the Combined Cadet Force. The current Commandant Air Cadets is Air Commodore Tony Keeling, who assumed the post in September 2020. He will leave the post in September 2024. On 15 August 2024, it was announced that Group Captain Al Lewis would replace Air Cdre Keeling as Commandant Air Cadets, effective 23 September 2024. Gp Capt Lewis is the incumbent Regional Commandant of London and South East Region (LaSER).

The Royal Air Force College (RAFC) is the Royal Air Force academy which provides initial training to all RAF personnel who are preparing to become commissioned officers. The College also provides initial training to aircrew cadets and is responsible for all RAF recruiting along with officer and aircrew selection. Originally established as a naval aviation training centre during World War I, the College was established as the world's first air academy in 1919. During World War II, the College was closed and its facilities were used as a flying training school. Reopening after the War, the College absorbed the Royal Air Force Technical College in 1966.
