Ethnic relations in India have historically been complex. India is ethnically diverse, with more than 2,000 different ethnic groups. There is also significant diversity within regions, and almost every state and several districts has its own distinct mixture of ethnicities, traditions, and culture. Throughout the history of India, ethnic relations have been both positive and negative.

Indian Mujahideen (IM) is an Islamist terrorist group which has been particularly active in India. It carried out several serial-bombings in Indian cities in the following years notably the 2007 Uttar Pradesh bombings, 2008 Jaipur bombings, 2008 Ahmedabad bombings, 2008 Delhi bombings, 2010 Pune bombing, 2011 Mumbai bombings, 2011 Delhi bombing, 2013 Patna bombings, 2013 Hyderabad blasts and the 2013 Bodh Gaya bombings.
Mallojula Koteswara Rao, commonly known by his nom de guerreKishenji, was an Indian political leader who was a Politburo and Central Military Commission member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), a banned revolutionary organization in India; and also the party's military leader. He was seen as "The Face of the Maoism in India".

Lee Bradley Brown was a British tourist who died in police custody in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He was arrested by the Dubai Police Force following an altercation with a Nepalese maid at the Burj Al Arab hotel where he was staying. After being placed in solitary confinement, he was found dead in his cell six days after he was arrested. The circumstances surrounding his death remain disputed. In November 2022, a second UK inquest into Brown's death was opened after the Brown family won a challenge at the UK High Court to overturn the original open verdict.
Pritilata Waddedar was a Bengali revolutionary nationalist from the Indian subcontinent who was influential in the Indian independence movement. After completing her education in Chattogram and Dhaka, she attended Bethune College in Kolkata. She graduated in philosophy with distinction and became a school teacher. She is praised as "Bengal's first woman martyr".
The 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder, commonly known as the Nirbhaya case, involved a rape and fatal assault that occurred on 16 December 2012 in Munirka, a neighbourhood in South Delhi. The incident took place when Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend, Avnindra Pratap Pandey. There were six others in the bus, including the driver, all of whom raped the woman and beat her friend. She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment and transferred to Singapore eleven days after the assault, where she succumbed to her injuries two days later. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. Subsequently, public protests against the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in New Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with security forces. Similar protests took place in major cities throughout the country. Since Indian law does not allow the press to publish a rape victim's name, the victim was widely known as Nirbhaya, meaning "fearless", and her struggle and death became a symbol of women's resistance to rape around the world.

On 26 February 2013, Mido Macia, a 27-year old Mozambican immigrant, was murdered by eight police officers in the custody of the South African Police Service. He was dragged by a police vehicle in the township of Daveyton in Gauteng, South Africa, a few hours earlier. A crowd witnessed the dragging incident, one of whom filmed it. Police said Macia had caused a traffic jam and then resisted arrest. On 25 August 2015, eight former police officers were found guilty of Macia's murder in the North Gauteng High Court.

Nido Tania was a 20-year old student from Arunachal Pradesh who was murdered in the Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi, triggering widespread protests. Tania was the son of Arunachal Pradesh Congress legislator Nido Pavitra. At the time of his death, he was studying at Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar. He was beaten by shopkeepers for resisting.
The Vyapam scam was an entrance examination, admission and recruitment scam. It was functional since the 1990s and was finally unearthed in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in 2013.
Jay Mala was an Indian journalist, politician, advocate and social activist. She was a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India, who filed over 600 cases and won each one, including a 1985 landmark case where she sued the State of Jammu and Kashmir changing tort law in India. Mala was co-founder of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) in 1982. On 7 May 2022 she became Chairperson of the Panthers Party Working Committee, and was de facto president of Panthers Party from 31 May 2022 to 4 April 2023.
V. P. Sanu is an Indian politician who is currently the National President of the Students' Federation of India, the students' wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He is also a member of the Kerala state committee of the CPI(M). He contested the parliamentary election in 2019 polls and 2021 by-polls representing CPI(M) in Malappuram, Kerala against IUML and lost both time.
Dipsita Dhar is an Indian politician and student activist. She is the All India Joint Secretary of Students' Federation of India. She was the CPI(M) candidate from Bally constituency for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. She is contesting the 2024 Indian General Election as a CPI(M) candidate from the Serampore.
M. Vijin is an Indian politician from Kerala state. He has been serving as the MLA of Kalliaseri Constituency since May 2021. He is the state vice president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Kerala unit. He was the former All India Joint Secretary of Students' Federation of India.
2021 Nabanna Abhijan was a protest march to the West Bengal state secretariat Nabanna, organised by Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Left Front and other Left parties and student organisations on 11 February 2021 against the alleged failures of TMC-led Government of West Bengal, which eventually turned into a conflict between the police and protesters. The protest march saw a massive involvement of youths, students and activists from SFI, DYFI and 8 other Left parties along with Indian National Congress and it's unions. Unemployment was one of major issues of this protest.
Shatarup Ghosh is an Indian politician from West Bengal belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). He had formerly served as the All India Joint Secretary of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the students wing of CPIM and was member of its central secretariat. Then he became a member of the state committee secretariat of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), which is the youth wing of CPIM. He has been inducted into the West Bengal State Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the 23rd Party conference of state in March 2022 and currently remains a member of it.
The protest against the death of Anish Khan, also known as the justice for Anish Khan protest, began on 18 February 2022 after the death of All India Students' Federation (AISF) leader Anish Khan. The AISF, Students' Federation of India, All India Students Association and other organizations organised protests, including rallies, human chains and demonstrations. The protests began in Jadavpur and Park Circus, initiated by students at Aliah University, then rapidly spread across the state of West Bengal and throughout India.
