Death of the Cool is the fourth full-length studio album by American rock band Cotton Mather, and the first new album from the group since 2001's The Big Picture. Death of the Cool was the first official release from band leader Robert Harrison's "Songs from the I Ching " project.
Cotton Mather had quietly disbanded in 2003, following the muted reception of The Big Picture and numerous personal setbacks. Throughout the remainder of the decade, Robert Harrison remained active in music, studying audio production and fronting the Austin, Texas collective Future Clouds and Radar. During this period, he considered working on a musical project which would assign one song to each hexagram of the I Ching . In 2012, Cotton Mather's Kontiki album was reissued in a deluxe edition, and the group reunited to play several one-off shows promoting its release.
With the other members of Cotton Mather, Harrison began recording songs for the I Ching project in 2013. Throughout the next three years, approximately 30 songs for the project were written and recorded. Harrison opted for a non-linear approach to the writing, instead basing the songs around his own experiences with the I Ching, "in real time and real weather". [3] In March 2016, he began posting the songs on his now-defunct blog. Each post was accompanied by a written commentary in which he described the hexagram using stories from his own experiences, and connected the reading to its corresponding song. [4]
Death of the Cool, released at the end of July, compiled eleven songs from what had been recorded to that point, including several which did not have entries on the blog. As with the writing process, the songs were not chosen or organized by their hexagram numbers, but rather by what Harrison thought would make the strongest album.
The album's cover depicts a car buried in snow. This is a reference to the last song on the album, "The End of DeWitt Finley", which tells the true story of a salesman who died after his car was trapped in a snowbank. Finley, a devout follower of God, opted not to attempt escape, but instead to wait for rescue, if that was God's plan. [5] Harrison's brother, poet Joseph Harrison, also wrote about Finley, in a poem sharing the same title as the song, published in his 2003 collection Someone Else's Name. The poem was included on Harrison's Songs from the I Ching blog.
The inside gatefold of the album depicts the interior of the car. In addition to things like musical instruments, recording gear, and books, the car is filled with Cotton Mather CDs, 7" singles, photos, and newspaper reviews, as well as sticky notes each bearing one of the album's song titles. The interior photo was taken by Valerie Fremin.

The Traveling Wilburys were a British-American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Originating from an idea discussed by Harrison and Lynne during the sessions for Harrison's 1987 album Cloud Nine, the band formed in April 1988 after the five members united to record a bonus track for Harrison's next European single. When this collaboration, "Handle with Care", was deemed too good for such a limited release, the group agreed to record a full album, titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Following Orbison's death in December 1988, the Wilburys continued as a quartet and released a second album, titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, in 1990.
I Ching divination is a form of cleromancy applied to the I Ching. The text of the I Ching consists of sixty-four hexagrams: six-line figures of yin (broken) or yang (solid) lines, and commentaries on them. There are two main methods of building up the lines of the hexagram, using either 50 yarrow stalks or three coins. Some of the lines may be designated "old" lines, in which case the lines are subsequently changed to create a second hexagram. The text relating to the hexagram(s) and old lines is studied, and the meanings derived from such study can be interpreted as an oracle.
"The Inner Light" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by George Harrison. It was released on a non-album single in March 1968, as the B-side to "Lady Madonna". The song was the first Harrison composition to be issued on a Beatles single and reflects the band's embrace of Transcendental Meditation, which they were studying in India under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the time of the single's release. After "Love You To" and "Within You Without You", it was the last of Harrison's three songs from the Beatles era that demonstrate an overt Indian classical influence and are styled as Indian pieces. The lyrics are a rendering of a poem from the Taoist Tao Te Ching, which he set to music on the recommendation of Juan Mascaró, a Sanskrit scholar who had translated the passage in his 1958 book Lamps of Fire.
As an important component of Chinese traditional culture, the I Ching's influence throughout history has been profound. The I Ching, or Classic of Changes, which dates from over 3,000 years ago, is believed to be one of the world's oldest books. The two major branches of Chinese philosophy, Confucianism and Taoism have common roots in the I Ching.
"Try Some, Buy Some" is a song written by English rock musician George Harrison that was first released in April 1971 as a single by American singer Ronnie Spector, formerly the lead vocalist of the Ronettes. She recorded it in London along with other Harrison compositions for a planned comeback album on the Beatles' Apple record label. The project was co-produced by Phil Spector, Ronnie's husband at the time, but abandoned following recording sessions that were hampered by his erratic behaviour. The only official release from the sessions, the single achieved minimal commercial success, peaking at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 63 on Canada's RPM Top 100. Harrison later added his own vocal onto a new mix of the instrumental track and included the song on his 1973 album Living in the Material World.
"Chapter 24" is a song from Pink Floyd's 1967 album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. This song was one of several to be considered for the band's "best of" album, Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. It was the second song recorded for the album.
"Hexagram" is a song by the American alternative metal band Deftones, and the second single from their eponymous fourth album. The cover art for the single is a work titled "Bandaged Love" by artist Ashley Macomber.

Cotton Mather is an American rock band from Austin, Texas, founded by Robert Harrison in 1990. Although the group started out as an experimental duo featuring guitar and cello, they evolved into a four-piece rock group with a sound centered around guitars and vocal harmonies. The group was initially active from 1990 to 2003, but returned from a nine-year hiatus in 2012 and have been active ever since. They have drawn comparisons to the Beatles, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Squeeze, and Guided by Voices. In his 2007 book, Shake Some Action, John Borack rated the Kontiki album at number 26 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time, comparing the album to Revolver-era Beatles, Big Star, and The Apples in Stereo. NME suggested Cotton Mather might be "the most exciting guitar pop band since Supergrass."
Future Clouds and Radar is an American rock group from Austin, Texas. It was founded by Robert Harrison after the dissolution of his previous group, Cotton Mather, and features several of the same musicians.
Kontiki is the second studio album by American rock band Cotton Mather. The album incorporates rock, pop, and psychedelic music, as well as elements of found sound and field recordings, reflecting the group's origins as an experimental act. It was recorded on four-track cassette and ADAT, leading to a rough, homemade sound. Originally released in 1997, Kontiki did not see any success until a 1999 re-release in England. In 2012, it was reissued on the Star Apple Kingdom label, with a bonus CD of extra tracks, as Kontiki Deluxe Edition.
Sugar & Spice is the fifth studio album by American singer Mya. It was released by Manhattan Recordings exclusively in Japan on December 3, 2008. The album was produced through Mya's own independent label imprint Planet 9 following her departure from Universal Motown amid the leakage of her previous album Liberation in the Japanese music market. Rather than spending time in court suing Motown/Universal, she opted out of her contract. Mya was then approached to record more albums exclusively for the Japanese market because of the positive response Liberation received.

The I Ching or Yi Jing, usually translated as Book of Changes or Classic of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text that is among the oldest of the Chinese classics. Originally a divination manual in the Western Zhou period (1000–750 BC), the I Ching was transformed over the course of the Warring States and early imperial periods (500–200 BC) into a cosmological text with a series of philosophical commentaries known as the "Ten Wings". After becoming part of the Five Classics in the 2nd century BC, the I Ching was the subject of scholarly commentary and the basis for divination practice for centuries across the Far East, and eventually took on an influential role in Western understanding of East Asian philosophical thought.
"Soft Touch" is a song by English rock musician George Harrison from his 1979 album George Harrison. It was also issued as the B-side of the album's lead single, "Blow Away", in Britain and some other countries, while in markets such as North America, it was the B-side of the second single, "Love Comes to Everyone". Harrison wrote the song while in the Virgin Islands with his future wife, Olivia Arias, shortly before recording his 1976 album Thirty Three & ⅓. The song is a love song in which Harrison also conveys his wonder at the idyllic island setting.
