Deepak Pental (born 1951) is a Professor of Genetics and the Ex Vice Chancellor at the University of Delhi. He is a noted researcher whose current research interests lie in development of transgenics and marker-assisted breeding of crops. He took charge of the post of Vice-chancellor of the University succeeding Professor Deepak Nayyar on 1 September 2005. As the VC,Pental has outlined his agenda to update the library system,work on teachers’recruitment,increase student accommodation facilities and bring researchers working abroad to India. [1] [2] A new frog species,Minervarya Pentali,discovered in Western Ghats by a team of Delhi University researchers;was named after Pental. [3]
Pental completed his B.Sc.(Hons) and M.Sc.(Hons. School) from the Department of Botany,Panjab University,Chandigarh in 1971 and 1973 respectively. And subsequently he did his Ph.D. from Rutgers University,United States in 1978. Pental was a Postdoctoral and University Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham from 1978-84. He returned to India to join Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) in 1985 and in 1993 he joined the University of Delhi,South Campus as Professor of Genetics. Pental had been Director of the University of Delhi,South Campus from 2000-2005. From 2005-2010 he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Pental’s research interests lie in breeding of mustard and cotton. He has published more than sixty research papers in the national and international peer reviewed journals and his work has led to major breakthroughs in hybrid seed production technologies. Pental is a keen student of social science policy particularly related to the field of agriculture. Years back Pental got Punjab University medal for diploma in Gandhian Philosophy which shows his interest in social sciences and Gandhian thought.

Nagendra Kumar Singh is an Indian agricultural scientist. He is presently a National Professor Dr. B.P. Pal Chair and JC Bose National Fellow at ICAR-National Institute for Plant Biotechnology,Indian Agricultural Research Institute,New Delhi. He was born in a small village Rajapur in the Mau District of Uttar Pradesh,India. He is known for his research in the area of plant genomics,genetics,molecular breeding and biotechnology,particularly for his contribution in the decoding of rice,tomato,wheat,pigeon pea,jute and mango genomes and understanding of wheat seed storage proteins and their effect on wheat quality. He has made significant advances in comparative analysis of rice and wheat genomes and mapping of genes for yield,salt tolerance and basmati quality traits in rice. He is one of the highest cited agricultural scientists from India for the last five years.
P. Ananda Kumar is an Indian plant molecular biologist and biotechnologist.
Atmaram Bhairav Joshi was an Indian agricultural scientist and academic,known for his contributions to the field of wheat and other crop breeding. He was the vice-chancellor of Mahatma Phule Krishi Viswavidyalaya,Rahuri and the chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute,New Delhi. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1975.
Sudhir Kumar Sopory is an Indian educationist,plant physiologist,scientist and former vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi. He is known to be the first to purify a protein kinase C activity from plants and is credited with the identification of topoisomerase as a substrate of protein kinase C. He is an elected Fellow of several major Indian science academies and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and is a recipient of many honours,including the 1987 Shanti Swarup Bhatangar Prize,the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri,in 2007,for his contributions to science and technology.
Ranbir Chander Sobti is an Indian educationist,cell biologist. He is a former vice chancellor of the Panjab University,Chandigarh and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University,Lucknow. He is known to have involved in advanced research in plant genetic studies and has written over 240 articles,and 22 books including Essentials of Biotechnology and Emerging Trends in Biomedical Science and Health. He is an elected Fellow of several major science academies such as Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,National Academy of Medical Sciences,National Academy of Sciences,India,and Punjab Academy of Sciences. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri,in 2009,for his contributions to Literature and Education.
Swapan Kumar Datta is a (Professor) of rice biotechnology who focuses on genetic engineering of Indica rice. Datta has demonstrated the development of genetically engineered Indica rice from protoplast derived from haploid embryogenic cell suspension culture. Golden Indica Rice with enriched Provitamin A and Ferritin rice with high iron content were developed by his group with a vision to meet the challenges of malnutrition in developing countries. Datta has been named as one among the top 25 Indian scientists from all fields of science by India Today.
Virender Lal Chopra was an Indian biotechnologist,geneticist,agriculturalist and a director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR),known to have contributed to the development of wheat production in India. He was the chancellor of Central University of Kerala,a Chancellor of the Central Agricultural University,Imphal and a member of the Planning Commission of India. An elected fellow of several science academies such as Indian Academy of Sciences,Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,National Academy of Sciences,India,European Academy of Sciences and Arts and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS),he was a recipient of a number of honors including Borlaug Award,FAO World Food Day Award and Om Prakash Bhasin Award. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 1985,for his contributions to agricultural science.
Khem Singh Gill was an Indian academic,geneticist,plant breeder and Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University. He was known for his contributions to the Green Revolution in India. Instrumental for breeding new strains of wheat,linseed,and sesame,he was the author of the book Research on wheat and triticale in the Punjab along with several additional articles on the subject. He was also the vice-president of The Kalgidhar Trust and The Kalgidhar Society,Baru Sahib,which is one of the largest Sikh charities. A Sant Teja Singh Chair Professor in Sikhism of the Eternal Global University and a founding fellow of The World Academy of Sciences,he was a recipient of Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Memorial Prize,Team Research Award of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR),FICCI Award,ICAR Golden Jubilee Award and Silver Jubilee Award of the Indian Society of Oilseeds Research. In 1992,the Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honor of the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to science.
Sardara Singh Johl is an Indian agriculture economist,writer,politician and the chancellor of the Central University of Punjab. A former National Professor of Agricultural Economics of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research,he served as the vice chancellor of the Punjabi University and Punjab Agricultural University during different tenures and chaired the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices set up by the Government of India. He is a former director of the Central Board of Governors of the Reserve Bank of India and a former consultant to international bodies such as Food and Agriculture Organization,World Bank and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 2004,for his contributions to Agriculture and agriculture education.

He is a former chancellor of the Central Agricultural University,Imphal,a former director of the Indian Agriculture Research Institute and a recipient of honours such as Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award,Borlaug Award and Om Prakash Bhasin Award. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1966,for his contributions to biological sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honor,the Padma Shri,in 1981.
Sushil Kumar Charak was an Indian geneticist and academic,known for his Plant and microbial genetical genomics,especially the studies on Escherichia coli and Lambda phage as well as on the mutants of Rhizobium. He was a former director of the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,National Academy of Sciences,India,and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1981,for his contributions to biological sciences.

Deepak Gaur was an Indian molecular biologist,and a professor at the School of Biotechnology of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Known for his studies on Plasmodium falciparum,Gaur is a recipient of the N-Bios Prize. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to medical sciences in 2017.
Akhilesh Kumar Tyagi is an Indian plant biologist and the former director of National Institute of Plant Genome Research. Known for his studies on plant genomics and biotechnology,Tyagi is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies namely Indian Academy of Sciences,Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences,India as well as The World Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 1999.
P. Pardha Saradhi is an Indian plant biologist and a professor at the Department of Environmental Studies of the University of Delhi. The team led by him is reported to have developed a transgenic mustard for the first time in India. He was also in the news for filing a case of plagiarism against KVSK Prasad,his one-time student and Deepak Pental,a former vice-chancellor of Delhi University.
Trilochan Mohapatra is an Indian biotechnologist,geneticist,former government secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and former director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Known for his studies in the fields of molecular genetics and genomics,Mohapatra is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences,India,the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2003.
Tilak Raj Sharma is an Indian plant biologist,the Deputy Director General (CS) of ICAR and former executive director and chief executive officer of the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI),and Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) respectively,both autonomous institutes under the Department of Biotechnology. Known for his studies in the fields of genomics and plant disease resistance,Sharma is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences,India,the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2007.
Manoj Prasad is an Indian plant geneticist,molecular biologist and working as a Professor in Department of Genetics at Delhi University. Previously,he worked as a Senior Scientist and JC Bose National Fellow at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) from 2004 to 2023. Known for his research on the stress biology of plants and virology,he is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy,the National Academy of Sciences,India,the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Indian Virological Society and was a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences,in 2014.
Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11,otherwise known as DMH - 11,is a genetically modified hybrid variety of the mustard species Brassica juncea. It was developed by Professor Deepak Pental from the University of Delhi,with the aim of reducing India's demand for edible oil imports. DMH - 11 was created through transgenic technology,primarily involving the Bar,Barnase and Barstar gene system. The Barnase gene confers male sterility,while the Barstar gene restores DMH - 11's ability to produce fertile seeds. The insertion of the third gene Bar,enables DMH - 11 to produce phosphinothricin-N- acetyl-transferase,the enzyme responsible for Glufosinate resistance. This hybrid mustard variety has come under intense public scrutiny,mainly due to concerns regarding DMH - 11's potential to adversely affect the environment as well as consumer health. DMH - 11 was found not to pose any food allergy risks,and has demonstrated increased yields over existing mustard varieties. Conflicting details and results regarding the field trials and safety evaluations conducted on DMH - 11 have delayed its approval for commercial cropping.
Ashwani Pareek is Executive Director of NABI a prominent plant biologist and educator noted chiefly for his contribution in plant molecular biology and biotechnology. He is currently working as Professor of plant molecular biology and biotechnology at the School of Life Sciences,Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi,and adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia,Perth,Australia. He is a recipient of several honors including the Visitors award for Technology Development from the President of India for developing Stress Tolerant Rice of the Next Generation (STRONG) that has the potential to enhance the income of rice farmers. The award ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on 2 May 2018. Recently on 26 February 2020,he has been awarded "Tata Innovation Award 2020" by Department of Biotechnology,Govt of India. He has interest in understanding the physiological and molecular adaptations in xero-halophytic plants and development of transgenic rice plants with enhanced tolerance towards multiple abiotic stresses.
