The Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners was formed on 14 August 1875 in the town of Paarl by a group of Afrikaans speakers from the current Western Cape region. From 15 January 1876 the society published a journal in Afrikaans called Die Afrikaanse Patriot as well as a number of books, including grammars, dictionaries, religious material and histories. Die Afrikaanse Patriot was succeeded in 1905 by today's Paarl newspaper.
Paarl is a city with 112,045 inhabitants in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is the third-oldest city and European settlement in the Republic of South Africa and the largest town in the Cape Winelands. Due to the growth of the Mbekweni township, it is now a de facto urban unit with Wellington. It is situated about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northeast of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province and is renowned for its haunting scenic beauty and deep viticulture and fruit-growing heritage.

The Reverend Stephanus Jacobus du Toit was a controversial South African nationalist, theologian, journalist and failed politician. In his younger years Du Toit did much to promote the Afrikaans language as a symbol of Afrikaner nationalism. Apart from the years 1882-8 when he was Superintendent of Education in the South African Republic, he lived in or near the town of Paarl in the Cape Colony. Disillusionment with the Kruger regime led him, in later years, to moderate his views. He was instrumental in initiating the translation of the Bible into Afrikaans and was a proponent of the Afrikaans language. He died an outcast.
Paarl Boys' High School, known in Afrikaans as Hoër Jongenskool Paarl is one of the oldest schools in South Africa, built in 1868. The school is situated in Paarl, a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The first headmaster of the school was Rev. George Jeffreys, followed by James Rettie, Mr J Inglis and Mr TW Engela followed by Mr L Knoetze. As of 2007 the headmaster of the school is Mr Derek Swart.
Gareth Morgan is a South African politician and a former member of parliament with the opposition Democratic Alliance. He is a former Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and previously worked as South Africa's Shadow Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs. He was South Africa's first carbon neutral Member of Parliament. He resigned from office in January 2013 to pursue a career in consulting., before joining the City of Cape Town as Principal Trade and Investment Officer in June 2015.
Willem Doman is a former South African politician, having served as the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and a Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance.
Wilmot Godfrey James is a South African academic who served as the country's opposition spokesperson of health and Member of Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance,. His constituencies were Mitchells Plain and Rondebosch. He was elected the party's Federal Chairperson between 2010–2015. Dr. James contested for the post of party leader in 2016, but lost the election to Mmusi Maimane. James served as director of Sanlam, Media24 and the Africa Genome Education Institute, and was chairperson of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Immigration Advisory Board of South Africa. He is also a former Trustee of the Ford Foundation of New York. He currently is a Senior Research Scholar at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy and teaches a course on catastrophic risks at Columbia University in New York City. He is a senior consultant to the Washington DC-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) on biosecurity.
Pieter Stephanus "Piet" du Toit, was a former South African rugby international. He played as a prop. Due to his relative small stature and light weight for a prop, but still being a strong scrummager, he was known as Piet "Spiere" du Toit. Spiere is the Afrikaans word for "muscles".
Geordin Gwyn Hill-Lewis is a South African politician who has been serving as the Shadow Minister of Finance since June 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he served as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Public Service from 2011 to 2012, as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry from 2012 to 2014 and as the Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry between 2014 and 2017. Hill-Lewis was first appointed to the National Assembly in August 2011.
Kevin John Mileham is a South African politician, a Member of the South African Parliament for the Democratic Alliance and the Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. Mileham was first elected to Parliament on 3 June 2013, replacing Athol Trollip. His first parliamentary role was as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development. After the 2014 National Elections, he was appointed the Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. In February 2019, he was appointed as Shadow Minister of Energy. After the National and Provincial Elections on 8 May 2019, Mileham was appointed as Shadow Minister of the expanded portfolio of Mineral Resources and Energy.
Christian "Chris" Hattingh is a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's official opposition, he has served at various times in the local, provincial and national tiers of his country's government. He was the longest-serving member of the North West Provincial Legislature before moving to the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of the national parliament in Cape Town, in 2015. He was the DA candidate for a municipal by-election that was held on 18 September 2019. He lost to the Freedom Front Plus candidate.
The 2019 South African general election was held on 8 May 2019 to elect a new President, National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.
Phumzile Van Damme is a South African politician and Member of the Parliament of South Africa representing South Africa’s official opposition, the Democratic Alliance. She was first elected at the 2014 South African general election and re-elected in 2019. She currently serves as a Whip in National Assembly and is a member of the Communications and Digital Technologies Committee. Van Damme has been described as a Social Liberal and is considered a global expert on misinformation.
Conrad James Poole is a South African politician who is currently serving as the Mayor of the Drakenstein Local Municipality. He previously served as the Deputy Mayor of Drakenstein. He is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Parlshoop is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, around 4 km west of City Hall. It borders Langlaagte to the north and Homestead Park to the northeast. The name comes from the village of Paarlshoop, the oldest private township on the Witwatersrand.
Ashor Sarupen is a South African politician who serves as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the Democratic Alliance (DA), after having taken office on 22 May 2019. He is a representative of the party on both the Standing Committee on Appropriations and the Standing Committee on Finance. He also served as Chief of Staff to DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille, and presently serves as her Parliamentary Counsellor. He previously served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019 and before that, he was the Democratic Alliance Chief Whip and City Councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality from 2011 to 2014.
Mmoba Solomon "Solly" Malatsi is a South African politician from Limpopo. He has been a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014. He was the national spokesperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) from June 2018 to November 2020. Malatsi was also the Parliamentary Counsellor to the DA Parliamentary Leader. He has also held posts in the DA's shadow cabinet.
