DemiDec Resources produces study materials for participants in the United States Academic Decathlon, [1] hosts the World Scholar's Cup, [2] and co-operates several study academies around the world. A private company, it was founded in 1994 by now-CEO [3] Daniel Berdichevsky. [4]
In the 1980s and early 1990s, the United States Academic Decathlon had few third-party companies that produced study materials for students, and individual teams had to do most of the research themselves. [5] [6] After setting an individual scoring record in the 1993–94 season and winning the National Championship, [7] Berdichevsky along with teammate Andrew Salter decided to address this vacuum by creating study guides and practice examinations for the next season. [8] [9]
Berdichevsky had been part of the Taft High School Academic Decathlon program in the 1992–93 season, but had felt "too scared of giving a speech" that year to compete. [8] The following year, he assumed the role of team captain and joined his teammates in winning the National Championship under the leadership of their coach Art Berchin. [7] The individual scoring record Berdichevsky set that year remained unbroken until 2008, when Isabel Salovaara of Whitney Young High School in Illinois earned 9,300 points, surpassing Berdichevsky's record by a small margin of three points. The study guides and resources Berdichevsky and Salter developed in their first year were limited, but enthusiasm for the venture was evidenced by the fact that it earned $20,000 in 5 months. [8] [9] [12] When their coach Berchin joined them the following year, DemiDec gained more stability and determined to continue the project. [8]
Within two years' time, the company had largely evolved into its current form, relying on "a network of former Decathletes, curriculum experts and experienced writers" to create a study course that includes both content and assessment materials and is known for its student-centered and engaging style. [8] The company annually releases a host of materials for Academic Decathlon competitors and coaches, including "Resource Guides," "Power Guides," "Cram Kits," flashcards, [3] quizzes, and sequenced examinations. [8] The materials are generally released in the summer after having been approved by "Beta testers," usually experienced Decathletes. [13] [14]
In 2006, citing disappointment that the United States Academic Decathlon ended at just a national level, Berdichevsky created the global academic competition the World Scholar's Cup.
The World Scholar's Cup spans six subjects: science, history, literature, art/music, social studies, and a special area. [2] At the competition, students participate in four events that encompass all six subjects: a curriculum-based debate, an essay, a multiple-choice test, and the "Scholar's Bowl," a live tournament in which team members collaborate to answer questions. [2]
Teams consist of either two or three students and can represent their school, multiple schools, or even whole countries. [15] The culmination of the annual competition is held in one of the competing countries. [16] [17] Besides DemiDec, companies that sponsor the World Scholar's Cup include FunnelBrain and iClicker. [18]
DemiDec also operates a number of academies in South Korea. Their programs prepare students in variety of subjects, with a special focus on SAT Preparation for Korean students interested in studying in America. [19] [20] [21]

The Academic Decathlon is an annual high school academic competition organized by the non-profit United States Academic Decathlon (USAD). The competition consists of seven objective multiple choice tests, two subjective performance events, and an essay. Academic Decathlon was created by Robert Peterson in 1968 for local schools in Orange County, California, and was expanded nationally in 1981 by Robert Peterson, William Patton, first President of the new USAD Board; and Phillip Bardos, Chairman of the new USAD Board. That year, 17 states and the District of Columbia participated, a number that has grown to include most of the United States and some international schools. Patton and Bardos served on the board in these two executive positions for the first 10 years of the USAD and not only personally contributed significantly both financially and in personal effort to the organization in those early day when there were no corporate sponsors they, along with Robert Peterson, were the major three factors in bringing corporate sponsors to the program during these challenging growth years eventually resulting in a financially self sustaining organization. In 2015 Academic Decathlon held its first ever International competition in Shanghai, China. Once known as United States Academic Decathlon, on March 1, 2013, it began operating as the Academic Decathlon.

Canyon del Oro High School (CDO) is a comprehensive public high school in Oro Valley, Arizona, located 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Tucson at the base of Pusch Ridge. Established in 1964, CDO is one of three high schools of Amphitheater Public Schools and serves about 1,600 students in grades 9–12. The school name originates from the remote Canyon del Oro in the nearby Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. The school mascot is the Dorado, a mythical Latin American warrior. The school colors are forest green and gold. The Dorado mascot was designed and painted on the gymnasium floor by former art teacher Diane Redhair in the mid-1960s. Her design was based on two different winning submissions by CDO students John Epling and Kenny Harris who had submitted their designs to a school-wide competition.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an international team academic program with more than 15,000 students participating from over 65 countries every year. The program was founded by DemiDec, in particular by Daniel Berdichevsky, in early 2006. First taking place in South Korea in 2007 at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies, the World Scholar's Cup aims to teach students with interesting, not-taught-in-schools lessons, and finding common ground between people of different statuses.

The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) is an American academic competition for high school students. The United States Academic Decathlon National Championship, first held in 1982, pits winners at the state level against each other for a national title. The Academic Decathlon consists of 10 events: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech. The Super Quiz replaces one of the seven objective events; since 2003, it has alternated between replacing science and social science. The Academic Decathlon requires participation from students of all levels of academic ability; teams generally consist of nine members, who are divided into three divisions based on grade point average: Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity. Though teams consist of nine members, only the top two individuals from each category are counted in the final team score. Each student has the possibility of scoring up to 10,000 points, for a combined team score of 60,000.
Granada Hills Charter is an independent charter school consisting of over 4,600 students in grades K–12, located in the Granada Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States. It is the largest charter school in the nation. Granada also has a high Academic Performance Index (API) score of 878, greatly exceeding the target API score of 800 for all schools in California.
