Dennis Itumbi is a Kenyan blogger and political commentator. [1] He is also an election consultant, known for his role in the campaign of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in the 2013 Kenyan general election and 2017 Kenyan general election in Kenya.[ needs update ]

Itumbi runs a company dealing with online reputational management, digital public relations and search engine optimization. [2]

Itumbi acted as a digital strategist for William Ruto during the 2022 Kenyan general election. In February 2022, an investigation into the Israeli hacking and disinformation operation Team Jorge showed that Itumbi had been the target of hacking ahead of the election. During a meeting with the undercover journalists, the group's leader Tal Hanan showcased how he was able to hack into Itumbi's Telegram account. [3] Itumbi subsequently confirmed to The Star that his Telegram account had been infiltrated, and that he noticed “increased activity” in the run-up to the election. [4]

Controversies

Fake Ruto Assassination Letter

In July 2019 Itumbi was arrested for authoring a fake assassination letter claiming that there was a plot to assassinate William Ruto. [5] According to police, Itumbi posted the fake assassination letter on his social media then deleted it. [6] In June 2023 a Nairobi court dropped charges against Itumbi after it found that the penal code he was accused of violating was found to be unconstitutional. [5] [7]

Fake News

In April 2014 Daily Nation reported Itumbi to be involved in creation of numerous fake news posts on social media accounts. In the same month Itumbi deleted some of his social media posts and apologised for creation of fake news. [8]

ICC Hacking

In March 2012 Itumbi was arrested for hacking the International Criminal Court website and exposing witnesses in the case against Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy. [9] [10] [11]

The International Criminal Court investigation in Kenya or the situation in the Republic of Kenya was an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the responsibility for the 2007–2008 post-election violence in Kenya. The 2007–2008 crisis followed the presidential election that was held on 27 December 2007. The Electoral Commission of Kenya officially declared that the incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was re-elected however supporters of the opposition candidate Raila Odinga accused the government of electoral fraud and rejected the results. A series of protests and demonstrations followed, and fighting—mainly along tribal lines—led to an estimated 1,200 deaths and more than 500,000 people becoming internally displaced.

The inauguration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the 4th president of Kenya took place on 9 April 2013. Kenyatta won 50.07% of the vote in the 2013 presidential election, after the supreme court dismissed the Raila petition on 30 March 2013. According to Article 141 (2) (b) of the constitution, in case the Supreme Court upholds the victory of the president-elect, the swearing in will take place on "the first Tuesday following the seventh day following the date on which the court renders a decision declaring the election to be valid." <span class="mw-page-title-main">Presidency of Uhuru Kenyatta</span>

The presidency of Uhuru Kenyatta began on 9 April 2013 after being sworn in as 4th president of Kenya and ended on 13 September 2022 after handing over to William Ruto. He succeeded Mwai Kibaki. During his inaugural speech Uhuru promised economic transformation by 2030, unity among all Kenyans, free maternal care and that he would serve all Kenyans. In 2017, he won a second term on 8 August and upon a Supreme Court verdict, the results were repealed. The resulting elections were controversial as Raila Odinga boycotted the elections and as the only other active candidate, he won by a 98% victory with the lowest turn out. A stalemate would result as Raila and His partners would carry out a parallel swearing in ceremony after Kenyatta's swearing in. Riots would break out as Raila entered the country resulting in a number of deaths. On 28 March the two partnered to form the Building bridges initiative ending the tense political atmosphere present in the country.

The 2018 Kenya handshake was a political truce made on the 9th of March 2018 between Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The two had been the leaders of opposing political factions amidst widespread political violence and civil unrest; they had previously faced one another in the contested 2017 Kenyan general election. Under the agreement, their political feud was resolved, with Kenyatta agreeing to support Odinga in the upcoming presidential elections. As a result, the Azimio coalition was formed, Uhuru became its chairman, and Odinga as the presidential candidate with Martha Karua as his running mate. They lost to William Ruto, who was Kenyatta's deputy at the time. They challenged Ruto's victory in the Supreme Court, however, Chief Justice Martha Koome said his claims did not meet the evidentiary threshold and dismissed the case. At a March 2023 protest in Nairobi they demanded an audit of the IEBC election servers.

Ndindi Nyoro, CBS, MP is a Kenyan politician, an entrepreneur and member of parliament (MP) for Kiharu Constituency, serving a second term.
