Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba is one of the three new universities established by the Delta State government and approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2021. This university offers Undergraduate courses and currently comprises six faculties: Agriculture, Science, Management and Social Sciences, Environmental Science, Arts and Computing. The Vice Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University is Prof Ben Emukufia Akpoyomare Oghojafor. [2]

History

The Dennis Osadebey University, Asaba was formerly Delta State University, Anwai Campus until it was converted to a full university by the Delta State Government. [3] [4]

In January 2021, Governor Ifeanyi A Okowa of Delta State announced plans to convert Delta State University, Anwai Campus Asaba and two other schools such as Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro and College of Education, Agbor into a full-fledged University. The bills had their first reading during plenary at the Delta State House of Assembly on the 28th day of January 2021. [5] In February 2021, the bills were passed into law after going through the House Committee on Education. [6]

While signing the bill which was passed by the State House of Assembly, Governor Ifeanyi A Okowa said, "As the students of our technical education start to progress from the technical colleges to the polytechnics, they also have a chance of going further to the University of Science and Technology." [7]

The Anioma people are a predominantly Igboid speaking ethnolingustic group located in present day Delta State, Nigeria. As Anioma is also an acronym derived from the regions that make up the Western Igbo area: Aniocha (A), Ndokwa (N), Ika (I) and Oshimili (O), the coinage was made by the founding father of the Anioma state movement, Chief Dennis Osadebay in 1951 and has since remained the preferred indigenous name by which the people collectively refer to themselves. The Anioma people encompass and are native to communities which span the 9 northern Local Government Areas of Delta State. Politically, the Anioma occupy the Delta North Senatorial District, where they are the majority.

Ozoro is a city and the headquarter of Isoko North Local Government area of Delta State, Nigeria. It is one of the two administrative units in the Isoko region of Delta State, southern Nigeria. Ozoro had been incorrectly spelt Usoro in some older maps of Nigeria. Ozoro, the capital city of Isoko North, has a population of approximately 186,000 inhabitants.

Agbor is the most populous city of approximately 67,610 among the Ika people. It is located in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, in South-south geo-political zone of Nigeria, West Africa. Agbor is the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area, in Delta State, Nigeria.

The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka, Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh.
