Deptford Cinema is a volunteer run, not-for-profit, community cinema, art gallery, and occasional music venue, formerly located at 39 Deptford Broadway in the Deptford district of the London Borough of Lewisham. At the time of opening in 2014 it was the borough's only functioning cinema. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] It had one downstairs screening room with roughly 40 seats, a mixture of traditional velvet movie theatre seating and sofas.

History

The volunteer body transformed the two-floor derelict space, a former shop front that had been closed for about 15 years, into a cinema using funds donated through Kickstarter. Prior to its opening Lewisham had for a time been one of only two London boroughs with no dedicated cinema. [7] [8]

The volunteer body has no hierarchy, meaning anyone can get involved with any aspect of running the cinema; from programming and marketing, to construction, front of house duties etc. [9]

Whilst struggling to pay off a large business rates bill in 2016, despite at the time being registered as a Community Interest Company, Deptford Cinema saw support from notable people such as Glenda Jackson and Sue Perkins. [3] [4] [8]

As of early 2018 the cinema had run, or was planning to run, seasons of films by directors such as Claire Denis, Xavier Dolan, Terry Gilliam, Doris Wishman, Spike Lee, Powell and Pressburger, Akira Kurosawa, Pedro Almodóvar, Andrzej Zulawski, Agnès Varda, Andrei Tarkovsky and more. The cinema also teamed up with streaming company Mubi several times for screenings to showcase films currently available through their service.

In October 2020 the collective announced due to ongoing temporary closures enforced due to the COVID-19 pandemic they had voted not to renew the lease on their current premises and would be seeking a new location. [10]

The bombing of Sandhurst Road School occurred during an air raid on Wednesday, 20 January 1943 when the school on Ardgowan Road, Catford, south east London was seriously damaged. A German fighter-bomber dropped a single 500-kilogram (1,100 lb) bomb on the school at 12:30 pm, killing 38 children and 6 staff and injuring another 60 people. Many were buried for hours under the rubble.

A by-election was held in the UK Parliament constituency of Lewisham East on 14 June 2018, following the resignation of Labour MP Heidi Alexander. It was the second by-election held during the 57th UK Parliament, which was elected in June 2017.

<i>Blue Story</i> 2019 film directed by Rapman

Blue Story is a 2019 British musical crime drama film written, directed, and narrated by Rapman through the medium of rap and starring Stephen Odubola and Micheal Ward, with Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Khali Best, Karla-Simone Spence, Richie Campbell, Jo Martin and Junior Afolabi Salokun in supporting roles. Serving as Rapman's feature directorial debut, the film is based on his 2014 YouTube series of the same name, which in turn is based on the real life gangs - the Peckham Boys and Ghetto Boys. The story follows best friends Marco (Ward) and Timmy (Odubola) who, from different areas of London, find themselves becoming enemies in a violent and insidious postcode war.
