Derek Panza (born February 16, 1971) is an American kickboxer and boxer from Queens, New York. He was the ISKA World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion and is undefeated as a professional boxer with a record of 7-0. [1] He currently trains fighters at Panza MMA, located inside world champion power lifter and bodybuilder Bev Francis' Powerhouse Gym in Syosset, New York.

Biography and career

Panza was born in Queens New York. He started training in Shotokan Karate at the age of 8 and was promoted to Black Belt by the age of 14. In 1986 at the age of 15 he won first place in kumite at National Junior Karate Championships. Soon after Panza began to compete in the men's over 18 black belt fighting division. By the age of 19 Panza had won numerous national and international karate championships and was ranked as the #1 heavyweight by the Professional Karate League (PKL) and number #2 by the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA). Panza fought in sport karate as a member of the United States Karate Team and Paul Mitchell Sport Karate Team.

At the age of 21 Panza began transitioning his martial arts career from sport karate to boxing and kickboxing. A year later Panza won the New York Metropolitan Boxing Championship in the super heavyweight division. A year after that he made his professional kickboxing debut with a 57-second KO victory.

In 1997, Panza won his first World Kickboxing Championship by Knocking out UFC Legend Pat Smith. [2] he would go on to Capture the Prestigious ISKA World Heavyweight Kickboxing Championship with a Unanimous Decision win over England’s Simon Dore. Panza was also one of the original fighters that fought in the World Combat League, produced by Chuck Norris. After fighting for the WCL, Panza was appointed Head Coach for the World Combat League Team “The New York Clash”.

Accomplishments

He has trained fighters to world championship status including World Kickboxing Champion Tim Lane, and IFL Champion Deividas Taurosevičius who currently competes in the WEC. Panza has also prepared professional fighters for their matches in UFC and Pride Fighting Championships including Lion’s Den standouts Guy Mezger and Pete Williams. He also trained Stuttering John Melendez, 175 lbs, of the Howard Stern Show to victory against K-Rock DJ Crazy Cabbie, 260 lbs, in their celebrity boxing match.

He wrote a monthly column called “Puncher’s Corner” in Full Contact Fighter Magazine for six years. This was an instructional column including basic striking technique, advanced technique, fight strategy, and training methods. He has made several TV appearances on The Howard Stern Show, ESPN2, Martial Arts World, and has had fights featured on MSG, ESPN2, and VS Network.

Derek has worked as a spokesperson for Met-Rx Nutrition and has been featured in countless martial arts and fitness magazines and books for both fight career coverage as well as giving training insight and instruction. Some of the books and magazines featuring Panza are “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Kickboxing,” “Black Belt Magazine,” “Fight Sport Magazine,” “Ultimate Fighter Magazine,” “Full Contact Fighter Magazine,” “Axle Magazine,” “Met Rx Magazine,” and “Muscular Development.” Panza has made numerous TV appearances on The Howard Stern Show, ESPN2, Martial Arts World, and has had fights featured on MSG, ESPN2, and Vs Network.

World Cagefighting Alliance

Panza was the President of the World Cagefighting Alliance. [3] The WCA was a Mixed Martial Arts fight promotion company that promoted professional fights in Atlantic City.

The International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) is one of the major international bodies regulating sport karate and kickboxing matches, and is based in the United States. It was established in 1985 as a response to legal and revenue issues that sent the Professional Karate Association (PKA) into decline.

Dennis Raymond Alexio is an American former Undisputed World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion who competed in the light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. Starting out as a light heavyweight, Alexio kicked off his career with an extensive, knockout-laden undefeated streak before losing a decision to Don "The Dragon" Wilson in a World Kickboxing Association (WKA) World Super Light Heavyweight Full Contact Championship match in 1984. He rebounded from this by winning the Professional Karate Association (PKA) World Light Heavyweight title that same year before moving up to cruiserweight and taking the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Cruiserweight Full Contact strap. In the late 1980s, he began his transition to the heavyweight division where he won six world titles and was considered the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion. Maurice L. Smith is a retired American kickboxer and mixed martial artist. In kickboxing, he held the WKC world light heavyweight championship, the WKA world heavyweight championship, and the ISKA world heavyweight championship. In mixed martial arts, he held the Heavyweight championship in Battlecade Extreme Fighting and the UFC, and became a member of the UFC Hall of Fame in 2017. Guy Mezger is an American martial artist, who competed in professional combat sports including Full Contact Karate, Kickboxing, and Boxing, but is most recognized as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. Mezger retired from professional competition on January 25, 2005. He is associated with Lion's Den and runs their school in Dallas. Mezger was a champion in mixed martial arts in two different promotions, the UFC and Pancrase. He holds wins over Tito Ortiz, Masakatsu Funaki, Yuki Kondo, Semmy Schilt, and Minoru Suzuki.

Lee Hasdell is a British martial artist, promoter and former professional kickboxer and mixed martial artist. Hasdell is considered by many to be a pioneer of mixed martial arts in the United Kingdom, particularly in the 1990s, when he drove a great deal of innovation in the field. Hasdell promoted the first professional mixed martial arts events in the UK and helped develop many of the standards within the British MMA scene of today.

Xhavit Bajrami is an Albanian-Swiss former kickboxer who competed in the heavyweight division. A Seido karate practitioner and Andy Hug student, Bajrami built up an undefeated record domestically before he was recruited by K-1 where he won the K-1 Braves '99 tournament and finished as runner-up in two other tournaments. He is also a two-time Muay Thai world champion, having won the ISKA World Super Heavyweight title in 2004 and the WKN World Super Heavyweight strap in 2010.

Kevin Rosier was an American kickboxer, boxer and mixed martial artist. He had much success as a kickboxer, winning a number of titles, but did not transition particularly well into the world of boxing and was mostly seen as a journeyman fighter. Notably, he also took part at the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship event in 1993 where he reached the semi-finals.

Stephen Thompson is an American professional mixed martial artist and model. Thompson currently competes in the Welterweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is a former full-contact kickboxer and was undefeated through 37 amateur and 20 professional kickboxing matches. Thompson is regarded as one of the most accomplished strikers in the UFC, as well as one of most respectful fighters in the sport. As of August 8, 2022, he is #6 in the UFC welterweight rankings.

Patrick Nwamu American martial artist

His parents are members of the Nigerian royal family of Asaba, Nigeria, and Nwamu was given the title of crown warrior prince for his accomplishments in professional fighting and his promotion of Asaba traditions and customs.

Simon Dore is a retired professional kickboxer from Leicester, England. Dore was a former World Kickboxing Network (WKN) world heavyweight kickboxing champion who fought most of his career under 'full-contact' rules but would also compete under 'free-style' rules and fought twice in K-1.
