Dermot Hurlston Payton (born 19 February 1945) is a former New Zealand first-class cricketer who played for Central Districts from 1965 to 1977. [1]
An opening batsman,Payton made his highest score of 145 against Otago in 1974–75. [2] He also represented Wairarapa in Hawke Cup cricket between 1963 and 1988,captaining the team when they held the title between February 1977 and February 1979. [3]
He has coached cricketers for many years,including some years as coach of Central Districts. In 2009 he was awarded an International Cricket Council centenary medal for services to cricket. [4] He is the Patron,and a life member,of the Wairarapa Cricket Association. [5] He has a farm near Masterton. [6]

He did,however,enjoy greater success as an all-rounder in District Cricket's Hawke Cup for Wairarapa,and as a bowler for Central District's under-23 team. He was also a very occasional right-arm medium bowler,who sent down a tidy yet wicket-less 64 balls.

His most notable sporting activity was as a cricketer,and he played four first-class matches. He served as an administrator on the New Zealand Cricket Council and was the organisation's president. He was a solicitor and then barrister in Feilding,and became Crown Solicitor in Palmerston North. He was a member of the Feilding Borough council and was the town's mayor from 1913 to 1919.
