Derrick America is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament,representing the Democratic Alliance. From 2014 to 2019,he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa.
In high school,America was a vocal opponent of apartheid and organised student protests. He first started work at the South African Post Office,where he had a confrontation with management about the apartheid system in place for employees. [1] America was then educated at the University of the Western Cape where he received a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours. His area of study focused on management and the labour market. He subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration at the Curtin University in Perth,Western Australia. America then worked as a school teacher,teaching business economics and accounting. He then served as an academic at Cape Peninsula University of Technology until 2009,lecturing in labour law and business courses. [2] America also arbitrated on labour disputes at the Commission for Concilliation Mediation and Arbitration from 2009 to 2011.
America was first elected as a Councillor in the City of Cape Town in May 2011. He represented residents of Kensington,Factreton,Maitland until 2014. He was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in May 2014,representing the Democratic Alliance. He was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2019.
Derrick is set to retire from the Provincial Parliament at the general election on 29 May 2024 as he did not make himself available for re-election. [3]
The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa,located in Cape Town,Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality.
Although the Democratic Alliance of South Africa in its present form is fairly new,its roots can be traced far back in South African political history,through a complex sequence of splits and mergers.
Daniel Plato,known as Dan Plato,is a South African politician and a former Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. He served from June 2011 until October 2018 and again from January 2022 until February 2024. He is the former mayor of Cape Town,a position he held for two nonconsecutive terms from May 2009 until June 2011 and again from November 2018 until October 2021. From June 2011 to October 2018,he was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety.
Andrew Louw is a South African politician who served as Leader of the Opposition in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2014 until 2021. He was the Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape from 2009 to 2020. He was previously a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa where he served as the Shadow Minister of Labour. Louw was the Democratic Alliance's Northern Cape Premier candidate for the 2014 and 2019 elections.

General elections will be held in South Africa on 29 May 2024 to elect a new National Assembly as well as the provincial legislature in each province. This will be the seventh general election held under the conditions of universal adult suffrage since the end of the apartheid era in 1994. The new National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will be elected at the first sitting of each provincial legislature. Since the inaugural post-apartheid election in 1994,the African National Congress (ANC) has consistently secured a majority of seats in both the National Assembly and the NCOP.

Isaac Mbulelo Sileku is a South African politician who has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2022. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he previously served as the Deputy Executive Mayor of the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality from 2016 until 2019 and as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from the Western Cape from 2019 to 2022.
Traverse Anatole Le Goff is a South African actor and politician who has served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since November 2022. As a member of the Democratic Alliance,South Africa's official opposition,Le Goff had previously served as a Councillor of the City of Cape Town.
