The company A/S Det Nye Teater was founded in 1918, by Johan Bojer and Peter Egge. [1] Among the largest financial supporters were ship owner Ivar An Christensen, and also the Norwegian State bought a significant number of shares. [2] The theatre building was designed by the architects Blakstad and Dunker. [1] The theatre's first artistic director was Ingolf Schanche, from 1928 to 1931. [2] [3] The theatre opened on 26 to 28 February 1929, with Knut Hamsun's trilogy, Ved rigets port, Livets spil and Aftenrøde, followed by Peter Egge's play Kjærlighet og venskap. [3] From 1931 to 1932 Thomas Thomassen managed the theatre, and from 1932 to 1933 Gyda Christensen. Einar Sissener was theatre director from 1933 to 1934, and Hjalmar Friis and Gyda Christensen jointly from 1934 to 1935. Sissener and Fridtjof Mjøen were managers until 1937, when Victor Bernau took over until 1939. From 1939 the theatre was managed by Gyda Christensen, and Tore Foss from 1945 to 1947. [3] Axel Otto Normann managed the theatre from 1947 to 1959. He was also the first director at Oslo Nye Teater after the merge between Folketeatret and Det Nye Teater in 1959.
Among actors who performed at Det Nye Teater were Hauk Aabel, Gunnar Tolnæs, Harald Stormoen, Knut Hergel, Agnes Mowinckel, Alfred Maurstad, Harald Steen, Tore Segelcke, Georg Løkkeberg, Wenche Foss, Jens Gunderssen, Sonja Wigert, Lillebil Ibsen, Henki Kolstad, Merete Skavlan, Knut Thomassen, Arne Thomas Olsen, Mona Hofland, Johannes Eckhoff and Per Sunderland. The Norwegian Actors' Equity Association is an association of Norwegian actors. Its main purpose is to improve actors' working conditions and to protect the artistic, judicial and financial interests of actors in Norway. The association was established in 1898, after an initiative from actor Sigurd Asmundsen at a birthday party in 1897, followed by a preparatory meeting in April 1898, and a constituent meeting 27 October 1898. The first chairman was Sigvard Gundersen, with Johanne Dybwad as vice chairman, and Christian Sandal as first secretary. Important issues during the early years were contractual conditions, pensions, and regulation of foreign ensembles. The association's first Honorary member was actor and later theatrical director Bjørn Bjørnson, nominated in May 1900.

Knut Thomassen was a Norwegian actor and theatre director. He made his stage debut at Det Nye Teater in Oslo in 1941. He served as theatre director of Den Nationale Scene from 1967 to 1976. He was an active participant in organizational work, and chaired National and Scandinavian theatre associations for many years. He was decorated Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1976, and received the Hedda Honorary Award in 1990.
Agnes Mowinckel was a Norwegian actress and theatre director. Born in Bergen into a distinguished family, she became Norway's first professional stage director. A pioneer in bringing painters to the theatre, she used light as an artistic element, and engaged contemporary composers. She took part in theatrical experiments, worked at small stages in Oslo, and founded her own theatre.

Barthold Johan Halle is a Norwegian stage instructor and theatre director. He worked for Studioteatret from 1947, was stage instructor at Rogaland Teater from 1949 to 1952, and joined Folketeatret from 1952 to 1959. He directed the films Afrikaneren from 1966, and Ungen from 1974. He was theatre director at Oslo Nye Teater from 1978 to 1984.
Ingolf Findregaard Schanche was a Norwegian actor and theatre director. He spent most of his career at Nationaltheatret in Oslo, and was also the first artistic director at Det Nye Teater.

Tore Foss was a Norwegian singer, actor and theatre director. He made his stage début at Chat Noir in 1927. He played at Balkongen from 1927 to 1928, and later worked for the National Theatre, Det Nye Teater, Centralteatret and Folketeatret. He participated in several films. Before his acting career, Foss undertook military training and became a reserve officer in the Norwegian Army. He married the actress Gunvor Hall in 1934.

Sverre Hansen was a Norwegian actor. He was born in Bergen. He made his stage debut at Studioteatret in 1945, and was later assigned at Det Nye Teater, Folketeatret, Nationaltheatret and Fjernsynsteatret. Among his films are minor roles in Ni liv from 1957 and Ugler i mosen from 1959, and his leading role in the film Eggs from 1995 earned him the Amanda Award.
Knut Mørch Hansson was a Norwegian actor. He was born in Alexandria, a son of judge Michael Hansson and Emilie Christensen. He was a brother of diplomat Arthur Mørch Hansson. He made his stage debut at Det Nye Teater in 1940. During the German occupation of Norway Hansson joined the Norwegian resistance movement. He was arrested and incarcerated in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Germany until 1945. In 1945 he continued his acting career with Studioteatret. He was later appointed at various theatres, including Det Nye Teater, Den Nationale Scene, Trøndelag Teater and Oslo Nye Teater, and with guest appearances at Riksteatret and Fjernsynsteatret. Among his film appearances are Englandsfarere from 1946 and I slik en natt from 1958. He chaired the Norwegian Actors' Equity Association from 1970 to 1974. He penned the memoirs of Herman Kahan, Ilden og lyset, in 1988, and his own memoirs in Kurer og fange from 1992.
