Development Dialogue [1] is an international conference on social entrepreneurship held by Deshpande Foundation, a non-governmental organization founded in 1996 by Dr. Desh Deshpande and Jaishree Deshpande. [2]

Contents

During this Dialogue, delegates from diverse sectors and geographies come together to share proven models, innovations and transforming perspectives about improving social infrastructure. [3] [4] Sessions on different aspects of social entrepreneurship are conducted during this conference with keynote addresses from Deshpande Foundation, partners and its associated organizations. This includes featured speakers, business-track specific offerings, and panel discussions. [5]

Development Dialogue is held annually in the three Sandbox regions :

Hubli Sandbox


Since 2008, Hubli Sandbox in Hubballi, India has been organizing the Development Dialogue. [6]

Ek Soch Sandbox


The Ek Soch Sandbox in Varanasi was co-founded by Dilip Modi, the pioneering telecom entrepreneur in India and Naveen Jha, CEO of Deshpande Foundation, India. The first Ek Soch Development Dialogue was conducted in 2016. [7] [8] [9]

Kakatiya Sandbox


The Kakatiya Sandbox in Telangana is a co-creation of Raju Reddy, Founder and former CEO of Sierra Atlantic and Phanindra Sama, co-founder of Redbus.in. The first Kakatiya Development Dialogue was conducted in 2016. [10] [11]

History

2008

The first Development Dialogue was held at the IMSR Business School in Hubballi, Karnataka in January 2008. Over 200 delegates from partner organizations came together to discuss their work in the Sandbox. [1]

2009

The second Dialogue was held on June 2 - 3 based on the theme ‘Sandbox & Global Perspectives’ where innovation in the Sandbox was highlighted.

2010

This dialogue held on June 21 - 22 featured over 40 speakers in various sector-based panels with the theme ‘Changing Mindsets’.

2011

Theme ‘Leveraging Opportunity’ held on January 27 - 29 [12]

Social entrepreneurship is an approach by individuals, groups, start-up companies or entrepreneurs, in which they develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues. The SMS publishes the Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and the Global Strategy Journal.

Unite for Sight is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2000 by Jennifer Staple-Clark specializing in healthcare delivery to communities around the world. The organization invests human and financial resources in local eye clinics in Ghana, Honduras, and India to eliminate patient barriers to care. As of January 2017, Unite for Sight has assisted more than 2.4 million people worldwide and provided over 97,000 vision-restoring surgeries.

Carl J Schramm is an American economist, entrepreneur, author, former President of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and University Professor at Syracuse University. He is the author of the book Burn the Business Plan: What Great Entrepreneurs Really Do, published by Simon & Schuster. The Economist named Schramm the "evangelist of entrepreneurship".

Agastya International Foundation (Agastya) is an Indian education trust and non-profit organization based in Bangalore, India whose mission is "to spark curiosity, nurture creativity and build confidence" among economically disadvantaged children and teachers in India. A team of scientists, educators, and entrepreneurs led by Ramji Raghavan founded Agastya in 1999. Agastya's founders include the late K.V. Raghavan, former chairman of Engineers India Limited and Dr. P.K. Iyengar, former chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. Agastya runs hands-on science and art education programs in rural, semi-urban, and urban regions across 19 Indian states. It is one of the world's largest mobile and hands-on science education programs catering to economically disadvantaged children and public-school teachers.

In his "A New Beginning" speech on June 4, 2009, at Cairo University in Cairo, Egypt, President of the United States Barack Obama announced, "I will host a Summit on Entrepreneurship this year to identify how we can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world". The Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, held in Washington, D.C., on Monday April 26, and Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Ronald Reagan Building, followed through on President Obama's commitment by highlighting the importance of social and economic entrepreneurship, and strengthening mutually-beneficial relationships with entrepreneurs in Muslim-majority countries and Muslim communities around the world. At the second summit in Istanbul, Turkey, Vice President Joe Biden announced that the Presidential Summit would become the marquee event that kicks off Global Entrepreneurship Week each year, with the 2013 host being the United Arab Emirates.

Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur (E-Cell) is a non-profit student's organization dedicated to promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among students throughout India. Established in 2006 under the aegis of STEP, IIT Kharagpur, E-Cell has since been involved in more than 70 startup companies in the initial stages of their existence. It is a student body under Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship (RMSOEE), IIT Kharagpur and has taken up various initiatives to promote new ventures by students of IIT Kharagpur and students across the country.

Deshpande Foundation is a non-governmental organization founded in 1996 in the US by Dr. Gururaj (Desh) and Jaishree Deshpande to accelerate the creation of sustainable and scalable enterprises that have significant social and economic impact. Foundation has embarked on large-scale projects in the United States and India such as :

Ramji Raghavan is a social innovator and entrepreneur. He is the founder and chairperson of Agastya International Foundation and Chairperson of the Navam Innovation Foundation, both Non Profit Organizations. Ramji served as a member of the Central Advisory Board of Education, Government of India. He is member of the Governing Council of the Marico Innovation Foundation. He has also served as a board member of Vigyan Prasar and as a member of the Working Group on Attracting Children to Science and Math of the Prime Minister's National Knowledge Commission. Ramiji is a well-recognized public speaker and has spoken at the Education World Forum, the annual INK Conference in association with TED, the Clinton Global Initiative, Harvard India Conference, MIT Media Lab, Peking University, Indian Institute of Science, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research the PanIIT Conference, the Confederation of Indian Industry, Deshpande Development Dialogue, the Indian Institute of Management – Bangalore, the WISE Summit 2014, Qatar and Indiaspora, USA and RAFT- Resource Area For Teaching, Bay Area, USA. The Asian Leadership Conference (ALC) is an annual international conference hosted in Seoul, South Korea, by The Chosun Ilbo, a major Korean daily newspaper. The inaugural conference was in March 2005. The conference addresses important issues in Asia and the world. The conference hosted over one hundred and fifty speakers and over one thousand guests.

The Jindal Centre for Social Innovation + Entrepreneurship (JSiE), is a research and innovation unit of O. P. KLE Technological University, formerly known as B. V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology (BVBCET), colloquially the BVBCollege, is a private university in Hubli-Dharwad, Karnataka, India. It was upgraded to a university under the KLE Technological University Act, 2012. The school was founded by the KLE Society, Belgaum, in 1947.

The Hubli Sandbox in Hubballi, India is an ecosystem launched by Deshpande Foundation that supports mission-driven individuals to come up with sustainable and scalable enterprises having social and economic impact. It's a co-creation of Dr. Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande, Indian American venture capitalist and entrepreneur and his wife Jaishree Deshpande.

The Global Entrepreneurship Summit is an annual event organized by the federal government of the United States, in partnership with foreign government hosts. The summit originated from an event organized by the Obama Administration called the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, which was held in April 2010 in Washington, D.C. It brought together entrepreneurs from the United States, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia to discuss the importance of social and economic entrepreneurship, establish entrepreneurship as an important area of policy focus, and strengthen mutually beneficial relationships between entrepreneurs.
