Early life and education

Devon Rodriguez was born in 1996 [1] in the South Bronx. [2] At age 8, he began doing graffiti with his friends [3] but, after being arrested at age 13, he turned his attention to drawing portraits. [4] In 2010, he applied for the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, but was not accepted. He then attended Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx for two years before being accepted to attend the High School of Art and Design in 2012. He graduated from that school in 2014, [3] and later attended the Fashion Institute of Technology. [4]

Career

While Rodriguez was still in high school, sculptor John Ahearn attended a school portrait exhibit and took notice of Rodriguez's realist oil paintings of subway passengers. Ahearn then asked Rodriguez to be a subject for his own sculpted portrait. [4] The resultant work, two plaster busts of Rodriguez called The Rodriguez Twins, was a finalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 2016. [5] Rodriguez attended the opening gala at the Gallery in place of Ahearn. [4]

In 2015, Rodriguez's own pieces were featured in an issue of Southwest Art . [6] His work, including some of his paintings of subway passengers, would go on to be featured in publications like The New Yorker , The Artist's Magazine , [1] and The New York Times Style Magazine in the following years. [3] Rodriguez also began taking commissions. [4] In 2019, it was announced that Rodriguez's portrait of John Ahearn was a finalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, three years after Ahearn's own portrait of Rodriguez received the honor. [7] The prize eventually went to Hugo Crosthwaite. [8]

In 2023, Rodriguez's talent agency, United Talent's Agency, staged his first pop-up solo show, "Underground", in their UTA Artist Space. Art critic, Ben Davis, penned an article about the show to which Rodriguez took offense. [9] Rodriguez's subsequent Instagram posts expressing his irritation resulted in his followers sending an onslaught of angry messages directed at Davis and his family. [10]

Brenda Zlamany American painter and portraitist (born 1959)

Brenda Zlamany is an American artist best known for portraiture that combines Old Master technique with a postmodern conceptual approach. She gained attention beginning in the 1990s, when critics such as Artforum's Barry Schwabsky, Donald Kuspit and John Yau identified her among a small group of figurative painters reviving the neglected legacies of portraiture and classical technique by introducing confrontational subject matter, psychological insight and social critique. Her early portraits of well-known male artists, such as Chuck Close and Leon Golub, reversed conventional artist/sitter gender and power dynamics; her later projects upend the traditionally "heroic" nature of portraiture by featuring underrepresented groups and everyday people.
