Dewakan is a fine-dining restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia founded and run by chef-proprietor Darren Teoh. The name is a syllabic abbreviation of two Malay words "dewa" (god) and "makan" (eat). [1] Opened in 2015, the restaurant is known for its focus on refashioning local produce to produce new inventive local cuisine. [2] It gained its first Michelin star in 2022, and its second star the next year. [3]

Description

Dewakan began as a molecular gastronomy restaurant as part of an educational entrepreneurial effort within KDU University College, Shah Alam in 2015, where its head chef, Darren Teoh also taught. [1] [2] It relocated to its current premise in Naza Tower, Persiaran KLCC in 2019. [4]

Dewakan specializes in modern Malaysian cuisine, which focuses on creating dishes centered on indigenous ingredients such as buah kulim and ulam raja, which were procured from around Malaysia. [1]

In 2019, Dewakan was placed 46th on the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list, the first and only Malaysian restaurant to receive the accolade. [5] [6] They repeated the accomplishment again in 2022. [7] They were awarded a Michelin star in the inaugural Michelin Guide Malaysia, becoming one of the first restaurants in Malaysia to receive the award. [8] They received their second Michelin star in 2023, becoming the first restaurant in Malaysia to do so. [3]

Yeoh was keen to show that Asian food has just as much standing in the fine-dining circuit as other cuisines. The head chef is Alex Chow, while Yeoh continues to be the proprietor to this day.

Olivier Elzer is a French chef. He was named one of the top 22 best young chefs in France by the guide Gault Millau in 2007. He was awarded a total of 23 Michelin stars for 16 consecutive years working in France and Hong Kong. Elzer is recognised for his work as head chef of Pierre at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hong Kong, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and his own branding restaurant, Seasons, by Olivier E. In 2018, Elzer established L'Envol, a modern French fine dining restaurant at the St. Regis Hong Kong. L'Envol is a 2 Michelin Stars restaurant. In 2022, Elzer created his own casual dining concept in Hong Kong named Clarence. Chef Elzer was awarded the Knight in the Order of Agricultural Merit of the French Republic in 2022.

Duangporn "Bo" Songvisava is a Thai chef and restaurateur. She and her husband, chef Dylan Jones, owned and operated Bo.lan, a restaurant in Bangkok's Sukhumvit neighborhood. In 2018 Songvisava was profiled on the fifth season of the documentary series Chef's Table.

Kitchen Table is a restaurant located in London, England. It was opened in 2012 by husband and wife, James Knappett and Sandia Chang. Along with the restaurant, they also opened a Champagne bar called Bubbledogs at the same site, but this was closed permanently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the old space being converted into a lounge for customers dining at Kitchen Table.

Saint Pierre is a Michelin-starred French cuisine restaurant in Singapore. Named after the Saint Pierre Chapel in Notre-Dame de Paris, it serves Asian-French cuisine. It was opened by Belgian-born chef Emmanuel Stroobant and his Malaysian-Chinese wife Edina Hong.
