Dhaka Comics is a Bangladeshi comic book publishing house established in 2013 by Mehedi Haque. The organization was founded with the goal of producing comic books comic books that can cater to Bangladeshi preferences and culture. [1] Mehedi Haque initiated the launch of Dhaka Comics by introducing four comic titles at the Ekushey Book Fair in 2013. [2]
One of its most popular characters is Durjoy, an antihero created by Tauhidul Iqbal Sampad. Durjoy operates outside the boundaries of the law to combat injustice in Bangladesh, and his popularity led to the creation of a collectible action figure that was well received by fans. The popular horror series, Nihilin Club and Pishach Kahini, both of which draw from the rich mythical traditions of Bangladeshi culture. Mehedi Haque is the creator of both the series, with Adrian Anik illustrating Pishach Kahini. [3]
In addition to its offerings for older audiences, Dhaka Comics has titles aimed at children. Among these, Asifur Rahman's Jitu ar Tee stands out, chronicling the adventures of a young boy, Jitu, and his extraterrestrial companion, Tee. The publisher has also adapted popular children's stories, including Humayun Ahmed's tales and Thakurmar Jhuli’s Lalkomol ar Nilkomol, into comic form. [3]
The publishing house also provides a platform for emerging artists and writers through its Nobin Series. Notable titles from this series include Ibrahim and Zum. Ibrahim, written by Tanjim-Ul-Islam and illustrated by Adrian Anik, tells the story of an orphaned teenager with superpowers who fights against oppression in rural Bangladesh. Zum, by Sabyasachi Chakma, follows Zumo, a teenager from Rangamati who harnesses energy from nature through meditation and becomes a target for his abilities. [3]
The publisher has also ventured into satire with Romel Barua's Lungiman, which humorously portrays the exploits of a superhero whose power comes from his lungi. The Comics house has adapted important works of Bangladeshi literature into graphic novels. Among these adaptations, Kazi Anwar Hossain's Poncho Romancho and Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal's Ruhan Ruhan have gained widespread popularity. [3]
Dhaka Comics has participated in the Ekushey Book Fair since 2016 with a dedicated stall. In addition to their comic books, they have expanded into merchandising, offering products featuring their original characters. One notable example is Durjoy, the protagonist of an action-thriller series created by artist Touhidul Islam Sampad, who was transformed into an action figure and debuted at the 2019 Ekushey Book Fair. In June 2020, Dhaka Comics expanded its reach by launching a digital comics section. These digital editions are offered at a 50% discount from the original print price. The publisher also introduced a yearly subscription option, which provides readers with access to both previous releases and upcoming titles slated for the following year. [3]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dhaka Comics also made select titles available as free PDF downloads, allowing fans to continue enjoying their comics. [2]
In collaboration with the Quizards, Life 101 Foundation, the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) "Diversity for Peace" initiative, they planned to launch a website named "Amader Golpo" with the aim of fostering positive changes in people's mindsets and thought processes by promoting concepts of diversity. The website was officially launched on November 16, 2020, on the International Day for Tolerance. "Amader Golpo" involves storylines based on 25 collected stories. A diverse team contributed to the project, ensuring that the stories and visuals were culturally appropriate and resonant. Dhaka Comics played a crucial role in designing the comic books. The website features five books, each containing five stories centered around a specific theme. These books are freely accessible. [4]
Humayun Ahmed was a Bangladeshi novelist, dramatist, screenwriter, filmmaker, songwriter, scholar, and academic. His breakthrough was his debut novel Nondito Noroke published in 1972. He wrote over 200 fiction and non-fiction books. He was one of the most popular authors and filmmakers in post-independence Bangladesh. Pakistani English newspaper Dawn referred to him as the cultural legend of Bangladesh.
Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is a Bangladeshi science fiction author, physicist, academic, activist and former professor of computer science and engineering and former head of the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). He achieved his PhD from University of Washington. After working 18 years as a scientist at California Institute of Technology and Bell Communications Research, he returned to Bangladesh and joined Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as a professor of Computer Science and Engineering. He retired from his teaching profession in October 2018. He is considered one of Bangladesh's top science fiction writers.
The Bangla Academy is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh that fosters the Bengali language, literature and culture, works to develop and implement national language policy and conducts original research in Bengali. Established in 1955, it is located in the Burdwan House in Shahbagh, Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair.
Suhrawardy Udyan is a national memorial and public space located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Originally known as Ramna Race Course, it holds significant historical importance due to its association with key events in the country's history.
Syed Shamsul Haq was a Bangladeshi writer. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1966, Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Independence Day Award in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contributions to Bangla literature. His notable works include "Payer Awaj Pawa Jai", "Nishiddho Loban", "Khelaram Khele Ja", "Neel Dongshon" and "Mrigoya".
Mohammad Nurul Huda is a Bangladeshi poet and novelist. He is a former Director General of Bangla Academy served during 2021–2024.
Sardar Jainuddin was a Bangladeshi novelist. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1967 and Ekushey Padak in 1994 posthumously.
Shahed Ali was a Bangladeshi litterateur and cultural activist. Aside from being an educationist and his journalism, he was one of the founders of the nationwide Tamaddun Majlish which initiated the Bengali language movement. He edited multiple magazines, was the founding secretary of the Islamic Academy, and is best known for his magnum opus, the short story Jibrailer Dana.
Unmad, the Sanskrit word for mad or insane, has been used as the name of a monthly satire magazine in Bangladesh. The magazine was founded by Ishtiaq Hossain and Kazi Khaleed Ashraf in 1978 and tries to ape MAD Magazine. Bangladeshi cartoonist Ahsan Habib is its present chief editor.
Asad Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi poet, writer, translator, radio, television personality, journalist, and cultural activist. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2013 and the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1987.
Muntasir Mamoon his full name is Muntasir Uddin Khan Mamun, he is a Bangladeshi writer, historian, scholar, secularist, translator, and professor at University of Dhaka. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award and Ekushey Padak by the government of Bangladesh.
The Bengali Language Movement was a political effort in East Pakistan that advocated the adoption of Bengali as an official language. The movement faced violent opposition by the government before finally succeeding. Numerous songs, poems, novels and plays were written to commemorate the movement, as well as films and memoirs.
There have been numerous works of art created as a result of the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 1971, a concert was organized by members of the British rock band, The Beatles, in support of Bangladesh. The songs recorded for and broadcast on Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra are still considered to be the best of Bangladeshi protest songs.

Basic Ali is a Bangladeshi comic strip written and illustrated by Sharier Khan, first published on November 26, 2006, on The Daily Prothom Alo. It has been adapted into a TV series on Channel I and renewed for a third season in February 2018.
Jeetu Ahsan or Jitu Ahsan is a Bangladeshi actor. The son of actor Syed Ahsan Ali, popularly known as Sydney, and educator Suraiya Ahsan, Ahsan made his acting debut as a child artist in Mustafizur Rahman's 'Ekti Shetur Golpo' (1982) in Bangladesh Television. As an adult, Ahsan professionally entered the acting arena with Abdullah Al Mamun's soap opera "Joar Bhata" in the year 2000. "Joar Bhata" was the first soap opera in the country in which Ahsan portrayed an anti-hero character and was immediately recognised as an upcoming talent. Throughout his career, Ahsan has ventured many anti-hero characters and received much applause. Esteemed Actor Humayun Faridee termed Ahsan as the best and the most talented of the contemporary actors. He received “RTV STAR AWARD” in 2014 as BEST ACTOR. He acted in a pivotal character of the highly acclaimed seven national award winner movie “Gohin Baluchor” in 2016. Among his notable works are “Shaola”, “Andhokarer Biruddhe”, “Jowar Bhata”, “Tobuo Protikkha”, “Nouka Dubi”,“Gohiney”, “Elebele”. He is also a member of "Aranyak Nattadal" in theater.
