Dharani (born V. C. Ramani) is a former Indian film director and screenwriter who primarily worked in Tamil cinema as well as directing one Telugu film. [1] [2] He is best known for directing the hat-trick action films, Dhill (2001), Dhool (2003), and Ghilli (2004). [3]
He pursued English literature degree at Loyola College then learnt editing at film institute. He also owned an orchestra under the name Dilip Ramani. After his diploma in film technology, he assisted six directors. [4]
He first directed the film Ethirum Pudhirum , loosely based on forest brigand Veerappan and his younger brother's death, starring Mammootty. Political controversies ensured its delayed release in 1999. It received critical acclaim and was awarded second place in the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film. The film's producer T. Ajay kumar made Dharani the director of his next production, starring Vikram, Dhill . The film was a box-office success and his next film Dhool , produced by A. M. Rathnam in 2003, again with Vikram along with Jyothika and Reemma Sen, was a box office success. He worked with A. M. Rathnam again for the film Ghilli starring Vijay and Trisha, that was a blockbuster movie and a comeback movie in Vijay's career. [5] It was followed by Telugu film Bangaram , featuring Pawan Kalyan in the lead. In 2008, he directed Kuruvi , rejoining the lead cast of Ghilli. Unlike the previous success in Ghilli, Kuruvi was an sleeper hit at the box office after completion of 150 days. In 2011, he remade the 2010 Hindi film Dabangg in Tamil as Osthe , with Silambarasan in the lead role, which was again declared an average hit.
Dharani announced that he would make a Telugu film titled Merupu with Ram Charan Teja and Kajal Aggarwal, and the film had an official launch in late April 2010. The film progressed slowly throughout 2010 and was later shelved by 2011. [6]

Ghilli ( transl. Gutsy) is a 2004 Indian Tamil-language sports action film directed by Dharani and produced by A. M. Rathnam. It is a remake of the Telugu film Okkadu (2003), written and directed by Gunasekhar, with few changes made to the story. The film stars Vijay in the lead role, alongside Trisha, Prakash Raj, Ashish Vidyarthi, Dhamu, Mayilsamy, Janaki Sabesh, Nancy Jennifer, Nagendra Prasad, Ponnambalam and Pandu. The film is about a Kabaddi player, who goes to Madurai to participate in an exhibition match, but instead rescues a woman from a gang leader, who forces her to marry him.

Dhool (transl. Fantastic) is a 2003 Indian Tamil-language masala film written and directed by Dharani. The film stars Vikram in the lead role alongside Jyothika and Reema Sen. Vivek, Sayaji Shinde, Telangana Shakuntala and Pasupathy play other roles. Produced by A. M. Rathnam at a cost of ₹7 crore, the film was released on 10 January 2003. It received positive reviews and was a commercial success. Dhool was remade in Telugu as Veede (2003) with Sen reprising her role and in Sinhala as Ranja (2014).
A. M. Rathnam is an Indian film producer, lyricist, screenwriter, and director known for his works in Telugu and Tamil cinema. Under Sri Surya Movies Entertainment, a movie production house he owns in Hyderabad, he has produced blockbusters in Telugu such as Karthavyam (1990), Peddarikam (1992), Sneham Kosam (1999), and Kushi (2001). He ventured into Tamil cinema in 1996 with the blockbuster Indian, which was India's Official Entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Harikrishnan is an Indian film director and screenwriter best known for his action and masala films in Tamil cinema. He made his directorial debut with Thamizh (2002). Osthe is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film directed by S. Dharani, a remake of the 2010 Bollywood film Dabangg. It stars Silambarasan, Richa Gangopadhyay, Sonu Sood, Jithan Ramesh, Santhanam, VTV Ganesh, Nassar and Revathi. Osthe tells the story of a fearless police officer, "Osthi" Velan (Silambarasan), and his troubled relationship with his stepfather and half-brother as he embarks on a mission to take down a corrupt politician. Sonu Sood reprised his role from Dabangg.

The film stars Vijay and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles, while Srihari, Salim Ghouse, Sayaji Shinde and Ravi Shankar appear in supporting roles. Gopinath handled the cinematography while V. T. Vijayan was the film's editor. This was Vijay's first film with AVM Productions and the only film B. Babusivan ever directed.

Osthe is the soundtrack album for 2011 Tamil film of the same name starring Silambarasan, Richa Gangopadhyay, Sonu Sood, Jithan Ramesh, Santhanam, VTV Ganesh, Nassar and Revathi. Osthe's soundtrack album and background score were composed by S. Thaman in his first collaboration with Silambarasan and Dharani, instead of Dharani's usual collaboration with Vidyasagar. Silambarasan said that composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, with whom he usually collaborates, had suggested signing Thaman as music director. The music rights were acquired by Sony Music India.
