After undergraduate study in London, she undertook a PhD at Swansea University followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Sheffield, researching microbial cytochromes P450. [1] After a position at Aberystwyth University she returned to Swansea University Medical School as Reader and then Professor. She continues to research sterol metabolism and microbial cytochromes P450 as targets for antifungal agents in medicine and agriculture, and has authored over fifty papers on these subjects. [2] [3] She is a member of the BBSRC pool of experts and Natural Products (NPRONET, NIBB) board member. [1] In 2017 she was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. [4] She has also chaired Swansea University's Athena SWAN committee, the medical school's Athena SWAN and Equality and Diversity committees, and is a regular member/chair of UK Athena SWAN assessment panels. He was Professor of Welsh History at the Aberystwyth University from 1990 to 1993, when he became Director of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. In 2009, he retired from academia and was appointed Professor Emeritus of Welsh History at the University of Wales.
Marion Sewer (1972-2016) was a pharmacologist and professor at the University of California, San Diego's Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences known for her research on steroid hormone biogenesis and her commitment to increasing diversity in science. Much of her research centered around cytochrome P450, a family of enzymes involved in the conversion of cholesterol into steroid hormones. She died unexpectedly at the age of 43 from a pulmonary embolism on January 28, 2016, while traveling through the Detroit airport.
Anita Thapar is a Welsh child psychiatrist who is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience at Cardiff University. Her research focuses on risk factors for ADHD and major depression in children. She was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1995, and of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Learned Society of Wales in 2011. In 2017, she received the Frances Hoggan Medal from the Learned Society of Wales and was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), both in recognition of her research in child and adolescent psychiatry.
