Dick Elliott was a Democratic member of the South Carolina Senate,representing the 28th District since 1992. He was previously a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1982 through 1992. He went to Wingate Junior College,now Wingate University,and to Clemson University. Elliott was a real estate developer. In 1959,he founded Elliott Realty,a real estate company. In 1971,he developed Eagle Nest Golf Course. He served on the Horry County,South Carolina Council and the North Myrtle Beach,South Carolina City Council. [1] [2]

Briggs v. Elliott,342 U.S. 350 (1952),on appeal from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of South Carolina,challenged school segregation in Summerton,South Carolina. It was the first of the five cases combined into Brown v. Board of Education (1954),the famous case in which the U.S. Supreme Court declared racial segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional by violating the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Following the Brown decision,the district court issued a decree that struck down the school segregation law in South Carolina as unconstitutional and required the state's schools to integrate. Harry and Eliza Briggs,Reverend Joseph A. DeLaine,and Levi Pearson were awarded Congressional Gold Medals posthumously in 2003.

Daniel Elliott Huger was a United States senator from South Carolina. Born on Limerick plantation,Berkeley County,his father was Daniel Huger,a Continental Congressman and U.S. Representative from South Carolina. Daniel Elliott pursued classical studies in Charleston and graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1798. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799,beginning practice in Charleston. In 1800 he married Isabella Johannes Middleton-daughter of Declaration of Independence signer Arthur Middleton. He was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1804 to 1819 and from 1830 to 1832,and was a brigadier general of State troops in 1814. He was judge of the circuit court from 1819 to 1830,and was a member of the South Carolina State Senate from 1838 to 1842. He was an opposition member of the State nullification convention in 1832.
