Dick Matena (born 24 April 1943) [1] [2] is a Dutch comics writer and cartoonist. He has also published under the pseudonyms A. den Dooier, John Kelly and Dick Richards. He has made several kinds of comics, from humor comics to erotic comics, but is best known for his comic book adaptations of famous literary novels. [3]

Biography

Toonder studios

In 1960, at the age of 17, Matena started working as a volunteer at the Toonder studios. He helped with the drawing projects of Tom Poes (1962–1963) and Panda (1961–1968).

In 1968 his first own comic appeared in the comic magazine Pep . [3]

Freelance period

In 1964 Matena started working as a freelancer, in the beginning mainly for the Toonder studios. He drew his own comic Polletje Pluim.

For Pep he drew De Argonautjes (1968–1973) and Ridder Roodhart (1969–1971). He wrote scenarios for the Macaroni's (1971–1975) and Blook (1972–1973). [3]

He later worked for the cartoon magazine Eppo, and wrote four scenarios for the comic Storm (1978–1980). Under the pseudonym Dick Richards he wrote eight scenarios for the comic De Partners (1976–1984), drawn by Carry Brugman. [3]

In 1977 Matena changed his drawing style and created his first realistic comic, Virl .

Foreign period

From 1982 until 1984 he lived in Spain and worked for Selecciones Ilustradas.

For the comic magazine Titanic , he created two starship stories. [3]

After his move to Belgium he created the comics De laatste dagen van Edgar Allan Poe, Gauguin en Van Gogh and Mozart & Casanova. [3]

Spin-off Storm and Beyond

With stories by Martin Lodewijk, Matena drew three spin-off comics of Storm. The series of these Storm albums are called Kronieken van de Tussentijd. He used his pseudonym John Kelly at first; the last comic is published under his own name. [3]

In 1997 he started again with the comic Tom Poes. Two stories were published in the Dutch version of the magazine Donald Duck .

Comics of Dutch literature

Matena draws comics of classical Dutch literary books. In 2003 he won the Bronzen Adhemar award. He was the first non-Flemish comics artist to receive this honor. [3]

The Stripschapprijs is a Dutch prize awarded to comic creators for their entire body of work. It is awarded annually by the Stripschap, the Dutch Society of comics fans, since 1974. The prize is non-pecuniary, but is considered the most important award for comics in the country.

Dutch comics are comics made in the Netherlands. In Dutch the most common designation for the whole art form is "strip", whereas the word "comic" is used for the (usually) soft cover American style comic book format and its derivatives, typically containing translated US superhero material. This use in colloquial Dutch of the adopted English word for that format can cause confusion in English language texts.

The Bronzen Adhemar is the official Flemish Community Cultural Prize for Comics, given to a Flemish comics author for his body of work. It is awarded by the Flemish Ministry of Culture during Strip Turnhout, the major Flemish comics festival, once every two years.

<i>Eric de Noorman</i>

Eric de Noorman was a Dutch comic strip, published in text comic format, and drawn by Hans G. Kresse from 1946 until 1964. The stories featured a Viking king, Eric, and his adventures overseas. Together with Kapitein Rob and Tom Poes, Eric de Noorman is widely considered to belong to the Big Three in Dutch comics history. Kresse's well documented stories and high quality drawing are praised and have influenced many other European comics artists. Eric de Noorman is one of the few Dutch comics to gain popularity in foreign translations. In the Netherlands, it was published in Het Vaderland, De Nieuwe Haarlemsche Courant and Tom Poes Weekblad, in Flanders in Het Laatste Nieuws and De Nieuwe Gazet, in Wallonia in Le Soir. The comic has been translated into French, Danish, Finnish, German, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese and English. From 1948 on the stories were published in oblong format books at the low price of 75 cent.

Panda was a Dutch comic strip series, created by Marten Toonder. After Tom Poes it was his second most successful and well known comic strip and very popular in foreign translations. It debuted in 1946 and ran until 1991.
