Dicle-Firat (newspaper)

Dicle-Firat was a bilingual newspaper in the languages Turkish and Kurdish and published in Istanbul between September 1962 and May 1963. It focused on the Turkification process of the Kurds and the so-called "Eastern question" while east was used to describe the eastern Kurdish regions in Turkey. It had lectors throughout most provinces and letters to the editorial board were sent in from a variety of cities such as Mardin, Erzurum, Van, Siirt, Igdir, Diyarbakir or Ağrı. Prominent Kurdish journalists like Yasar Kaya, Musa Anter or Edip Karahan, played a significant role in the newspaper. [1] The newspaper also established an office researching the Kurdish heritage in the Kurdish populated region in the east of Turkey. [2] Edip Karahan, the owner of the newspaper and Musa Anter were arrested in June 1963 and the newspaper closed down by the Turkish authorities. [1]

Ayla Akat Ata is a Kurdish–Turkish jurist and former member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). She is a women's rights activist and the co-founder of the Free Women's Congress (KJA). Besides she was also involved in the negotiations between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish Government in 2013.

The Revolutionary Cultural Eastern Hearths were an association of mainly Kurdish students in Turkey. It was formed in 1969 and forbidden after the military coup in 1971.

Kurdish-Turkish peace initiatives, there were several, since the conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party began in 1978. Some were successful, others not. But the first real approach to the Kurdish question in Turkey came after the Government of Turgut Özal decided to end the policy of denial of the Kurds and allow the Kurdish language to be spoken in 1991 and later on in the same year also to be broadcast.

Mehmet Şerif Fırat was a Kurdish author and is known for his 1945 book History of Varto and the Eastern Provinces in which he denied the existence of Kurds and claimed they are of Turkish origin. The book was republished in 1961 and counted with a foreword from the Turkish president Cemal Gürsel.

Sırtköy is a town (belde) in the İdil District of Şırnak Province in Turkey. It is populated by Kurds of the Dudêran, Kiçan and Meman tribes and had a population of 2,305 in 2021.
