Diego Tenorio Benavente (born April 21, 1959) is a Northern Mariana Islands politician. Benavente, a Republican, served as the sixth Lieutenant Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, under former Governor Juan Babauta, from January 14, 2002, to January 9, 2006.

Biography

Benavente first ran for election in 1987, when he narrowly lost his bid for election to the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives in Precinct II by just six votes. [1] However, Benavente was elected to the House in his second campaign in 1989. [1] He served in the House for six consecutive terms, including three terms as the Speaker of the House. [1] He left the House in 2000 to run for Lieutenant Governor in 2001.

Benavente was elected Lieutenant Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands as the running mate of Juan Babauta in the 2001 gubernatorial election. [1] He served in office from 2002 to 2006. Babauta and Benavente lost their bid for re-election in 2005 to Covenant Party candidate Benigno Fitial and his running mate, Timothy Villagomez. [1]

Benavente announced his candidacy for Governor in the 2009 election on December 11, 2008. [1] However, Benavente dropped out of the race in February 2009 leaving two candidates - Heinz Hofschneider and Juan Babauta - in the race for the Republican nomination. [2]

Benavente was again elected to the CNMI House of Representatives in 2007. [1] He is currently serves as the Minority Leader of the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives as of April 2011. [3]

Benigno Fitial seventh governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

Benigno Repeki Fitial was the seventh governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). The second longest-serving governor in CNMI history, Fitial was elected on November 6, 2005, assumed office on January 9, 2006, and was re-elected to a (five-year) second term in 2009. He was impeached by the CNMI House of Representatives on February 11, 2013 and was scheduled to face trial before the CNMI Senate to determine if he should be removed from office. He resigned on February 20, 2013 after 7 years, 1 month, and 11 days in office.

2009 United States gubernatorial elections

The 2009 United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 2009 in the states of New Jersey and Virginia as well as in the U.S. commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on November 7, 2009. Both state governorships were previously held by Democrats elected in 2005, and were both won by Republicans in 2009; the local Covenant Party maintained control of the governorship of the Marianas. These elections formed part of the 2009 United States elections.

Heinz Sablan Hofschneider is a Northern Mariana Islands politician. Hofschneider served as the Speaker of the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004.

As no candidate received a majority of the vote, a run-off election was held 14 days later. Incumbent Republican Governor Eloy Songao Inos and running mate Ralph DLG. Torres were elected. Inos, who served as lieutenant governor from 2009 to 2013, first became Governor following the resignation of his predecessor, Benigno Fitial.

2018 Northern Mariana Islands gubernatorial election

The 2018 Northern Mariana gubernatorial election took place on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, to elect the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Lieutenant Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands to a four-year term in office. The election, which corresponds to the larger Northern Mariana general election and the United States midterms, was originally scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. However, Governor Ralph Torres postponed all elections in the territory until November 13 due to the impact of Typhoon Yutu, which struck the Northern Mariana Islands as a Category 5 storm in October 2018, shortly before the planned elections.

Janet Ulloa Maratita is a politician from the Northern Mariana Islands. She represents District No. 1 in the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives, of which she currently serves as Vice-Speaker. She chairs the Committee on Health and Welfare for the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation, and is vice-chair of the Health Committee; she is also a member of the Ways and Means Committee. She is currently a member of the Republican Party. Maratita was appointed to the 17th Legislature in 2011, replacing Diego Benavente; she had previously served in the House in the 14th Legislature. At the time an independent, she sat alongside Felicidad Ogumoro and Teresita Santos, marking the first time three women were simultaneously members of the body. In 2014 she declared her intent to run for a seat in the Northern Mariana Islands Senate in the election of 2014. Returned once more to the House of Representatives in 2016, she was elected Vice-Speaker when positions were meted out. Earlier in her political career Maratita gained attention for leading a lawsuit against then-governor Benigno Fitial, later co-authoring one of the two resolutions passed by the House calling for his impeachment. She later claimed that Senator Juan Ayuyu had repeatedly threatened her life in a telephone conversation regarding the lawsuit.

2018 Northern Mariana Islands general election

The 2018 Northern Mariana Islands general election were held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, corresponding with the 2018 United States midterm elections. Originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, the elections were delayed by one week due to the impact and aftermath of Typhoon Yutu. Early voting was held from Tuesday, November 6, until Monday, November 12, 2018. An estimated 18,975 voters were eligible to vote in the 2018 election.
