Vertigo Comics was an imprint of American comic book publisher DC Comics started by editor Karen Berger in 1993. Vertigo's purpose was to publish comics with adult content, such as nudity, drug use, profanity, and graphic violence, that did not fit the restrictions of DC's main line, thus allowing more creative freedom. Its titles consisted of company-owned comics set in the DC Universe, such as The Sandman and Hellblazer, and creator-owned works, such as Preacher, Y: The Last Man and Fables.

A flatter is a coloring specialist within the comic book industry that prepares the inked or sketched comic book page for the colorist with digital art software such as Adobe Photoshop. The specialist does so by selecting the objects on the page and filling them in with a solid color called a "flat", so that the "flats" can be used by the colorist by way of the "magic wand" tool. In this way, the colorist may select each object during the rendering process—to the exclusion of the other objects on the page—so that the object's base color may be changed, or to render the colors.

Steve Lieber is an American comic book illustrator known for his work on books such as Detective Comics and Hawkman, and the critically acclaimed miniseries Whiteout, which was adapted into a 2009 feature film starring Kate Beckinsale. Pamela Rambo is a colorist who has worked in the comics industry, perhaps best known for her work on Dark Horse Comics's Star Wars series. Additionally, she has worked for DC Comics's Vertigo imprint on such titles as Preacher and Y: The Last Man. After filling in for issue 13 of Preacher, Rambo eventually took over coloring duties from Matt Hollingsworth at issue 31, maintaining a consistent style on the book during the second half of its run, with the series winning an Eisner Award in 1999 for best continuing series. Her work on Y: The Last Man has seen her regarded as an unsung hero by series creator Brian K. Vaughan and a fan favourite.
