Doctor Victor is a Czech rock trio formed in Prague in 2012. The band consists of Victor on vocals and lead guitar, Al on bass, and Tom on drums. Doctor Victor's music is based primarily on the legacy of traditional rock from the late 1960s and early 1970s, with elements of blues music.

In 2016, they released their debut album, 1st Prescription. The band's 2018 single "StandUP" was included in the Czech selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. [1]

History

Founding and early days: 2012–2015

Doctor Victor was founded in 2012 by Victor, a graduate of the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague and holder of a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. [2] The band won the Hard Rock Rising 2013 contest in the Czech Republic [3] as well as the Czech Global Battle of the Bands contest in 2014. In the contest's worldwide finals in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the band placed second. [4] In April 2014, they were on the cover of the Czech music magazine Muzikus, [5] and their single "Beautiful Age" got into the top 70 rock songs in the Unsigned Only Music Competition in the United States in 2015. [6] They continued to perform, opening for popular Czech bands such as Lucie [7] and Chinaski. [8]

Debut album, touring, and Eurovision Song Contest: 2016–2018

Doctor Victor's debut album, 1st Prescription, was released on 21 March 2016 and two months later, they were chosen by AC/DC as their support band for the Prague show of their Rock or Bust World Tour. [9] [10] In February 2017, they launched their first official tour, named Music Is My Drug Tour, at clubs and festivals across the Czech Republic. In May, they were on the cover of the magazine Rock & All. [11] In the summer of 2017, they performed in the United Kingdom for the first time, playing six cities, including London. [12] [13] In October, the band revealed that they would be collaborating on the upcoming solo album of Dan McCafferty, original lead singer of Nazareth. [14] The album, titled Last Testament, was released in 2019 and featured Doctor Victor on the track "My Baby". [15]

The band's single "StandUP" was released in January 2018, together with an announcement of its inclusion in the Czech national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. [1] The song was chosen out of more than 400 submissions from all over the world. [16] [17] [18] Doctor Victor went back on tour in 2018 and travelled to the UK as well as other European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria. After finishing their summer tour, they were selected among the top ten semi-finalists in the KISS KRUISE 2018 competition. [19] Also in 2018, the band opened for The Dead Daisies in Prague. [20]

2019–present

In 2019, the band toured the UK and USA, performing at the NAMM Show in California, among other venues and events. [21]

The Czech Republic was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Malá dáma", written by Milan Špalek, Ota Váňa, Josef Vojtek, Radek Hurčík, and Tomáš Krulich, and performed by the band Kabát. The Czech participating broadcaster, Česká televize (ČT), organised the national final Eurosong 2007 in order to select its entry for the contest. This was the first-ever entry from the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest, and the first-ever entry performed in Czech in the contest.

Kabát is a Czech hard rock band from Teplice formed in 1983. The members of the group are Josef Vojtek, Milan Špalek, Tomáš Krulich (guitar), Ota Váňa (guitar), and Radek Hurčík (drums). Kabát has enjoyed major popularity in their home country since 1989, and they are the holders of multiple Anděl Awards. The band represented the Czech Republic as the country's first entry in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 in Helsinki, Finland. Between 2003 and 2017, they won the Český slavík award twelve times. In 2014, they were inducted into the Beatová síň slávy, the Czech equivalent of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are considered one of the most successful rock acts in Czech history.

Chinaski is a Czech pop rock group. In 2005, they won an Anděl Award, granted by the Czech Academy of Popular Music, and repeated this success in 2007. They have also repeatedly placed in the top ranks of the Český slavík awards.

Vladimír Padrůněk was a Czech jazz and rock bass guitarist. He is known for his work with the groups Jazz Q, Energit, Etc..., Abraxas, and others.

The Czech Republic participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "I Stand" written by Christian Schneider, Sara Biglert and Aidan O'Connor. The song was performed by Gabriela Gunčíková, who was internally selected by the Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) to represent the nation at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Gunčíková and the song "I Stand" were announced as the Czech entry on 10 March 2016. The song was presented to the public on 11 March 2016.
