Domen Butte

Domen Butte ( 72°43′S3°50′W / 72.717°S 3.833°W / -72.717; -3.833 Coordinates: 72°43′S3°50′W / 72.717°S 3.833°W / -72.717; -3.833 ) is a snow-topped butte with steep rock sides, just southwest of Hogskavlen Mountain in the Borg Massif of Queen Maud Land. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–52) and named Domen (the dome). [1]

In geomorphology, a butte is an isolated hill with steep, often vertical sides and a small, relatively flat top; buttes are smaller landforms than mesas, plateaus, and tablelands. The word "butte" comes from a French word meaning "small hill"; its use is prevalent in the Western United States, including the southwest where "mesa" is used for the larger landform. Because of their distinctive shapes, buttes are frequently landmarks in plains and mountainous areas. In differentiating mesas and buttes, geographers use the rule of thumb that a mesa has a top that is wider than its height, while a butte has a top that is narrower than its height.

Borg Massif

Borg Massif is a mountain massif, about 50 km (30 mi) long and with summits above 2,700 metres (8,900 ft), situated along the northwest side of the Penck Trough in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica. The tallest peak, at 2,727 metres (8,947 ft), is Hogsaetet Mountain. The parallel, ice-filled Raudberg Valley and Frostlendet Valley trend northeastward through the massif, dividing its summits into three rough groups:

  1. Located at the northern end of the Borg Massif is the summit of Borg Mountain, a large, flattish, ice-topped mountain with many exposed rock cliffs.
  2. Located at the northeastern end of the Borg Massif is the summit of Ytstenut Peak. The name "Ytstenut" means "outermost peak" in the Norwegian language.
  3. Located at the southern end of the Borg Massif is the summit of Hogfonna Mountain. The name "Hogfonna" means "the high snowfield" in the Norwegian language.

The cirque was mapped from surveys and air photos by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–60) and named Kvitkleven.

Mount Koons is a small mountain situated 1 nautical mile (2 km) east of Miller Butte in the Outback Nunataks, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–64, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Robert W. Koons, a United States Antarctic Research Program logistics coordinator with the McMurdo Station winter party, 1968.

Gunnestad Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Gunnestad Glacier is a glacier 13 nautical miles (24 km) long, flowing north between Mount Widerøe and Mount Walnum in the Sør Rondane Mountains of Antarctica. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers in 1957 from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and named for Lieutenant Alf Gunnestad, a pilot with the Norwegian expedition under Lars Christensen, 1933–34.

Portalen Pass is a mountain pass between Domen Butte and Pilarryggen, in the Borg Massif of Queen Maud Land. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (NBSAE) (1949–52) and named Portalen.

The Du Toit Nunataks are a group of nunataks between Cornwall Glacier and Glen Glacier, marking the western end of the Read Mountains, Shackleton Range. They were photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1967, and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey, 1968–71. In association with the names of geologists grouped in this area, they were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Alexander Logie du Toit, a South African geologist.

Festninga Mountain

Festninga Mountain is a broad, ice-topped mountain, 2,535 metres (8,320 ft) high, standing west of Mount Hochlin at the west end of the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains, in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. it was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–60) and named Festninga. Austvollen Bluff forms the east side of the mountain.

Festningsporten Pass is an ice-covered gap in the middle of the north face of Festninga Mountain leading to the mountain's flat summit, in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. it was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–60) and named Festningsporten.

Long Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Long Glacier is a glacier about 8 nautical miles long in the southeastern part of Thurston Island, Antarctica. It flows south to the Abbot Ice Shelf, 14 nautical miles (26 km) west of Harrison Nunatak. The glacier was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Fred A. Long, Jr., an aviation machinist of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, who wintered at Little America V in 1957 and was in Antarctica in the 1960–61 and 1962–63 seasons.

Heap Island is an island off the southeast coast of Renaud Island in the Biscoe Islands of the Graham Coast of Antarctica, between Jurva Point and Bates Island. In association with the names of sea-ice specialists grouped in this area, it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1985 after John A. Heap, a sea-ice specialist with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1955–62, who worked in the Antarctic with FIDS, 1955–56, with the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1956–57, and with the United States Antarctic Research Program, 1962–63. He was later head of the Polar Regions Section at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and a member of the UK-APC from 1976.

The feature was first photographed from the air by the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–39). It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (NBSAE) (1949–52) and named Tyskepasset, presumedly because it was seen earlier by the German expedition.

Høgskavlen Mountain is a prominent, flattish, snow-topped mountain just northeast of Domen Butte in the Borg Massif of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–52) and named Høgskavlen.

Veten Mountain is a mountain about 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) northwest of Hogskavlen Mountain in the Borg Massif of Queen Maud Land. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (NBSAE) (1949–52) and named Veten, meaning "the beacon."

Vann Peak is a small but prominent bare rock peak which is the central and dominant feature of three aligned peaks at the west end of Ohio Range. It was surveyed by the United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) Horlick Mountains Traverse party in December 1958, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Charlie E. Vann, the chief of the photogrammetry unit responsible for Antarctic maps in the Branch of Special Maps, U.S. Geological Survey.
