Doreen Pamela Chung (Chinese :吴思群;c. 1932 –5 September 2009) was a Guyanese public figure and the wife of the first Guyana President Arthur Chung. She served as the inaugural First Lady of Guyana from March 1970 until October 1980. [1] [2]
Chung was born Doreen Pamela Ng-See-Quan in Windsor Forest,West Demerara,British Guiana. [1] In 1954,she married the future Guyana President Arthur Chung,with whom she had two children,Diane Pamela and Raymond Arthur. [1] [2] The couple remained married for 54 years,until President Arthur Chung's death on 23 June 2008. [1] [3]
Doreen Chung died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Georgetown,Guyana,on 5 September 2009,at the age of 77. [1] Her funeral was held at St. Saviour's Church in the Charlestown neighborhood of Georgetown. [3] Chung was buried in the cemetery of St. Jude's Church in Blankenburg,West Coast Demerara. [3] She had resided in Bel Air Springs,Guyana. [2]

Arthur Raymond Chung was the 1st President of Guyana from 1970 to 1980. He was the first ethnic Chinese to be head of state in a non-Asian country. He was honoured with Guyana's highest national honour,the Order of Excellence (O.E.). Chung was a leader in Guyana's fight for independence during the British colonial era.

Company Path Garden is a small garden on the west side of the Avenue of the Republic in Georgetown,Guyana,between Church and North Streets. During colonial times,“company path”was the name given to a road used by the propertied class as an access road from the river to their lands. The company path,in this case,extended from the side of the Demerara River along the path on which the Bank of Guyana was built and eastwards beyond the Avenue of the Republic.
The Very Reverend John Kenneth Young was the Dean of St George's Cathedral,Georgetown,Guyana from 1948 until 1957. Born in 1914,he was educated at Clare College,Cambridge,ordained in 1939 after a period of study at Ripon College Cuddesdon and began his career with curacies at St James,West Hartlepool and St Mary Magdalen,Medomsley. From 1943 to 1948 he was vicar of Demerara River,Guyana and then Dean of the Diocese's Cathedral. Returning to England he held incumbencies at Harton,North Yorkshire,Eastgate,County Durham and Forcett,Richmondshire. Young died in Darlington,County Durham in June 1991 at the age of 77.
The BaháʼíFaith in Guyana was first mentioned in Baháʼísources as early as 1916,the first Baháʼís visited as early as 1927 but the community was founded in Guyana in 1953 with the beginning of the arrival of coordinated pioneers and from Guyanese converts. The community elected the first BaháʼíLocal Spiritual Assembly in 1955 and an independent National Spiritual Assembly in 1977.
