Dorothy Okello is a Ugandan electrical engineer, and professor known for founding the Women of Uganda Network or WOUGNET. [1] [2] In 2016, she became the first female president of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers [3]

Education

She has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Makerere University, Uganda, obtained in 1992, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering (1999) from the University of Kansas where she was a Fulbright Scholar, [4] and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2004) from McGill University in Montreal, Canada (where she received a Commonwealth Scholarship). [5] She has worked to get more women and rural communities engaged in the information society. [6]

Career

She is currently the Dean School of Engineering at Makerere University. [7] She is Africa's first-ever Digital Woman of the Year, an honour bestowed upon her at an Africa ICT Days gala ceremony for the Digital Woman Award finalists that took place on 16 November in Yaoundé, Cameroon. [8]

In October 2012, Okello was awarded the Women Achievers Award for her service in empowering women and girls through Science and Technology. [9]

Okello was elected as the first female president of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers at the institution AGM on 29 April 2016. [10] On 2 June 2016 a congratulatory letter from the Irish President Michael D. Higgins was presented to her by the Irish Ambassador to Uganda Dónal Cronin on becoming the first female president of the institution. [11]

Academic authorship

She is highly respected researcher and has carried out most of her work with netLabs!UG, a research centre within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the university. [12] Her work has been published in reputable journals and some of it includes (1) Coverage and rate of low density ABS assisted vertical heterogeneous network which was published in the 2022 IEEE 33rd Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) [13] (2) Unmanned aerial vehicles: opportunities for developing countries and challenges which was published in the 2020 IST-Africa Conference (IST-Africa) [14] (3) A deep reinforcement learning-based algorithm for reliability-aware multi-domain service deployment in smart ecosystems. [15] (4) Effect of different organic substrates on reproductive biology, growth rate and offtake of the African night crawler earthworm (Eudrilus eugeniae). [16] (5) Resource-aware workload orchestration for edge computing published in 2020 28th Telecommunications Forum (TELFOR). [17] (6) Leveraging the technology of unmanned aerial vehicles for developing countries published in SAIEE Africa Research Journal. [18] (7) Rebuilding the internet exchange point in Uganda published by the 2017 28th Irish Signals and Systems Conference (ISSC). Kamisetty Ramamohan Rao was an Indian-American electrical engineer. He was a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. Academically known as K. R. Rao, he is credited with the co-invention of discrete cosine transform (DCT), along with Nasir Ahmed and T. Natarajan due to their landmark publication, Discrete Cosine Transform.

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) is a professional association representing electrical and electronic engineers, technologists and technicians in Southern Africa. The organisation is listed as a recognised Voluntary Association by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the statutory body that registers professional engineers, professional certificated engineers, professional engineering technologists and professional engineering technicians in South Africa. Over a century, the activities of the SAIEE have included publication, education, the promotion of electrical engineering, professional development of its members, public events, and participation in public debate affecting the profession, industry and society.

The Bernard Price Memorial Lecture is the premier annual lecture of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers. It is of general scientific or engineering interest and is given by an invited guest, often from overseas, at several of the major centres on South Africa. The main lecture and accompanying dinner are usually held at the University of Witwatersrand and it is also presented in the space of one week at other centres, typically Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth.

He formerly served as Director of the Carl and Emily Fuchs Institute for Microelectronics at the University of Pretoria, from which he graduated with a Ph.D. in electronic engineering.

Ziria Tibalwa Waako is a Ugandan electrical engineer and corporate executive, who serves as the executive director and chief executive officer of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, since November 2016. She replaced Benon Mutambi, who was appointed the Permanent Secretary of the Uganda Ministry of Internal Affairs. For the first four months, from November 2016 until March 2017, she served in an acting capacity, until her confirmation on 27 March 2017.

Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, is a Ugandan electrical engineer and corporate executive, who serves as the Director of Engineering and Communication Infrastructure at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho, is a Ugandan lawyer, business administrator and corporate executive, who serves as the registrar general and executive director of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), effective December 2020. Etheldreda Nakimuli-Mpungu is a professor, researcher, epidemiologist and psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine, Makerere University in Uganda. Her research is particularly focused on supportive group psychotherapy as a first-line treatment for depression in people with HIV. She is one of only five recipients of the Elsevier Foundation Award for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World in Biological Sciences, as well as listed at one of the BBC's 100 Women in 2020.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Linda Doyle</span> Irish engineer, professor and academic leader

Linda E. Doyle is an Irish academic and educator who is since 2021 the 45th Provost of Trinity College Dublin, the university's chief officer, having assumed the office in August 2021. An electrical engineer, she has had a long academic career at Trinity, from the 1990s, most recently as Professor of Engineering and the Arts, in addition to holding other management roles such as Dean of Research. She has also led one telecommunications research centre at the university, and was the founding director of another, the multi-institution organisation known as CONNECT. Doyle has worked as a member of regulatory and advisory bodies in both Ireland, on broadband network strategy, and the UK, on mobile spectrum allocation. She is or has also been a director of public outreach projects such as Science Gallery Dublin and its international network, of two non-profit art galleries, and of two university spin-off companies.

Yasamin Mostofi is an Iranian-American Scientist and a Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara. Yasamin’s research is multi-disciplinary, expanding wireless communications, sensing, and control/robotics.

William Wasswa is a Ugandan lecturer, engineer and researcher. He serves as a senior lecturer in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda.

Athina Markopoulou is a Greek-American engineer who is Professor, Chancellor's Fellow, and chair at the University of California, Irvine. Her research considers internet privacy, data transparency and mobile data analytics. She was elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2020.

Ian Craig is a South African engineer. He was selected to give the 67th 2018 Bernard Price Memorial Lecture from the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE). The title of his lecture was Automatic Control: The Hidden Technology that Modern Society Cannot Live Without.
