The Surrey Light Rail system was a planned 10.5-kilometre (6.5 mi) network in Surrey,British Columbia containing one light rail line radiating from the Surrey Central SkyTrain station and transit hub. First proposed in 2012 by Surrey mayor Dianne Watts,construction on the project was planned to start in 2019 with an opening date set for 2024. At the inauguration of the new Surrey City Council on November 5,2018,and after a change of municipal leadership,the newly installed council unanimously voted to "indefinitely suspend" the project in favour of an extension of the SkyTrain Expo Line to Langley Centre.

Rich Coleman was elected interim leader announcing that he has no intention of running for leader,but would resign as interim leader if he changed his mind,adding that he did not anticipate changing his mind.
The 2018 Vancouver municipal election was held on October 20,2018,the same day as other municipalities and regional districts in British Columbia selected their new municipal governments. Voters elected a mayor,10 city councillors,7 park board commissioners,and 9 school board trustees through plurality-at-large voting. Official registration for all candidates opened on September 4,2018,and closed on September 14,2018.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is a municipal police force in the city of Surrey,British Columbia,Canada. It is one of several police departments within the Metro Vancouver Regional District,and as of December 2022,the second largest municipal police service in British Columbia. Prior to the SPS's establishment,Surrey was Canada's largest city without a municipal police service. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police,Canada's federal police force,currently has policing jurisdiction in Surrey,and SPS has had difficulty with the transition from the RCMP due to opposition from Surrey mayor Brenda Locke and the municipal government. In April of 2024 the provincial government of British Columbia set a deadline for the transfer of jurisdiction. The Surrey Police Service will transition into the role of municipal policing in Surrey on November 29,2024.
