Montana is a state in the Mountain West division of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west, North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. It is the fourth-largest state by area, the eighth-least populous state, and the third-least densely populated state. Its state capital is Helena. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands, with smaller mountain ranges found throughout the state. In all, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.

John Quincy Farmer was a Minnesota politician, jurist, and Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He first served in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1866, and was elected speaker one year later, serving in the position until he left the house in 1868. He later served in the Minnesota Senate from 1871 to 1872, and was a judge for Minnesota's 10th judicial district from 1880 to 1893. J. Q. Farmer died while traveling westward on a Northern Pacific train outside of Billings, Montana. Farmer had been en route to Yellowstone National Park with his wife. He was eighty-one years of age.

The 1978 United States Senate election in Montana took place on November 7, 1978. Following the death of United States Senator Lee Metcalf on January 12, 1978, Montana Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul G. Hatfield was appointed to serve for the remainder of Metcalf's term. Hatfield opted to run for a full term, but was overwhelmingly defeated in the Democratic primary by U.S. Representative Max Baucus of the 1st congressional district. Baucus advanced to the general election, where he was opposed by the Republican nominee, author Larry R. Williams. Baucus ended up defeating Williams by a solid margin to win his first term in the Senate, and, following Hatfield's resignation on December 12, 1978, he began serving his first term in the Senate.

John C. Vincent is an American politician in the state of Montana. He served in the Montana House of Representatives from 1975 to 1990. From 1985 to 1986 and 1989 to 1990, he was Speaker of the House. After his legislative career, he served as the mayor of Bozeman, Montana from 1994 to 1995 and as a commissioner of Bozeman from 1992 to 1995. From 2001 to 2006, he was Commissioner of Gallatin County, Montana. He was elected to the Montana Public Service (utilities) Commission in 2008, and served a four-year term.
John A. Mercer is an American politician and attorney in the state of Montana. He served in the Montana House of Representatives from 1984 to 2000. From 1993 to 1999 he served four terms as Speaker of the House, and in 1993 served as minority leader. He is the longest serving Speaker of the House of Montana in state history. After serving as chairman of the Montana Board of Regents, Mercer ended a considerable career in public service.
