Dover Bay Secondary School is the largest public high school in Nanaimo, British Columbia. It was founded in 1992. In 2002, Dover Bay had 1,860 students.
In 2011, it was the recipient [2] of the Staples (Canada) Recycle for Education award for its excellence in being eco-responsible, and in turn constructed a computer lab valued at $50,000. In 2012, students at Dover Bay brought the school to media attention when it won the Einstruction Flip Your Classroom Makeover Contest [3] for its Gangnam Style - inspired music video.

Auckland International College was an independent coeducational secondary school in Auckland, New Zealand. AIC was established by a Japanese educational for-profit corporation, Oshu Corporation. It adopted the IB Diploma Programme as its sole curriculum plus a preparation year programme for the course. The school ran with a Northern Hemisphere timetable. AIC also offered a six-month course running from January to June for international students whose English is not at a high enough level to embark on the year 11 preparation year programme. The AIC English course for senior secondary studies covered all curriculum subjects, developing and improving English language skills required for further study in a New Zealand classroom. The Japanese for-profit corporation, Oshu Corporation, that owned the school permanently closed the school in 2023 due to difficulty attracting international students.

It aims to increase student engagement and learning by having pupils complete readings at home, and work on live problem-solving during class time. This pedagogical style moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. With a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home, while actively engaging concepts in the classroom with a mentor's guidance.

Jon (Jonathan) Bergmann is a chemistry teacher and one of the developers of the "flipped classroom" model of teaching along with fellow chemistry teacher Aaron Sams. Although already noted for his teaching, Bergmann decided to "flip" what students did in his classes, watching video lectures at home and doing exercises (homework) in class under supervision. He and Sams not only found that grades went up, they also found time for other types of activities, which Bergmann states is more important than the videos. Bergmann has since become the lead technology facilitator for a school in Illinois, and has worked to promote the models speaking at schools, universities and more both in the United States and abroad. He currently teaches science at a high school in suburban Houston Texas.
